Wellington Vineyards Library Cabernet Sauvignon Magnum -- Signed by Winemaker Peter Wellington
You will receive a magnum of Cabernet Sauvignon, randomly selected from Wellington's Library.
Over the years we have made wine using Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from 20 different vineyards, five of which attained vineyard designate status at least once. The three vineyards represented in this offer consistently produced great grapes and were, not coincidentally, the largest contributors to our Victory Reserve blend. You will receive a magnum from one of these three vineyards:
Random Ridge, Mt. Veeder District. This vineyard produced one of our most intense and distinctive wines from 1989 until 1998, when the grower decided to use 100% of his vineyard for the production of his own brand (Random Ridge). At 2300 feet elevation, this is the highest vineyard in the Mt. Veeder appellation, and the combination of sparse soils and intense sunlight results in small, intensely tannic grapes, low in herbaceous character, with a unique sage like note that may be attributed to the chaparral that surrounds the vineyard.
Mohrhardt Ridge, Sonoma Coast. Also an unique site, Mohrhardt Ridge is less than five miles from the Pacific Ocean, yet at 1500 feet elevation is always above the fog. It ripens late and typically retains high acid / low pH, giving the wines surprising longevity despite its relatively soft tannins. We often refer to it as the stylistic antithesis to big jammy Napa Cabs. Several wine writers / reviewers have noted a similarity to wines from the Bordeaux commune of St. Estephe.
Hulen Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley. This vineyard was purchased by Dick Handal in 2003 and is now called Handal-Denier Vineyard. It is a great site for Cabernet, on an east facing hillside with exceptionally well drained red soil. 100% Cabernet with classic aromas of cassis, blackberry, bell pepper and cedar.
