Take Two!
Not many winemakers would ride in on a white horse and wave their magic sword in the air. But as soon as Peter Wellington saw we were in trouble, he appeared! Clad in glittering armor, he decreed "JUST BECAUSE WE RAN LOW ON THE 2007 CAB DOESN'T MEAN MY GLORY HAS TO END!" and poof! We were holding the same pack, but with a 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon instead!
What other winemaker would be so prepared? Face facts, latecomers: you'll be getting almost exactly the same wines as we had this morning, but with one small difference: there's now a 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon in the mix. Go on, peek at the features. Compare them. You'll see they're pretty much the same as before (except for that Cab, of course!) And if you're anything like us, this will only make you even happier.
Why? Dudes! You got to sleep in, have a leisurely breakfast, take a long bath, read a novel, and you STILL get a case of Peter Wellington wine! Nothing against you early risers, of course, you guys got a sweet deal too. But isn't it great to have one day when EVERYONE gets a little P-Well? Can we call you P-Well, Peter? Oh, what's that? "Under no circumstances should you ever do that again?" Okay, fair enough. Sorry.
Features
Due to your overwhelming response (and the fact Peter loves you), Wellington has extended this offering with one little change. They are out of the 2007 Cabernet, but are happy to provide their 2008 Cabernet. You're welcome.
2007 Merlot, Sonoma Valley Estate Bottled 750ml 2-Pack
The nose has deep blackberry, blueberry and cherry aromas, brown sugar/caramel, lots of brown spice (cinnamon and nutmeg) with hints of chocolate, black tea, tobacco and cedar. The fruit is spot-on ripe, with neither any greenness nor raisin. The entry is full bodied and supple, but with enough acid to keep it clean and focused. The flavors echo the aromas – lots of fruit and spice. The finish is clean and dry with good length. This vintage has a bit more tannin than the previous couple of years and has good potential to develop with aging over the next 2-5 years. This wine will pair nicely with stews, pot roast, and Toby's favorite-spinach farfalle pasta with lots of pine nuts.
2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County 750ml 2-Pack
Youthful medium dark red color. Aromas of black currant and cherry with notes of mocha, cedar, caramel, black pepper and spice. The oak is well integrated and not overpowering. The entry is full and supple without being overly sweet or heavy, the mid-palate fruity with lively acid; the finish a bit chewy still, with lingering fruit and oak. With over 2 years of bottle age, this wine already has a smooth, long finish, but still has the stuffing to evolve for several years.
In 2008, Wellington's Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon again has Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc in the blend. They use both of these traditional Bordeaux grapes in their Victory Reserve, and also do blending trials to see if they will improve the Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. In 2008 the Cabernet sauvignon was a little softer than in 2006 or 2007, so Wellington used more of the PEBs (performance enhancing blenders) to bring a little more muscle to the game. As a result, this wine has similar structure and balance to the 2007 - rich and round with nice acid balance, all at a moderate alcohol content of just below 14%.
2007 Syrah, England Crest, Sonoma Valley 750ml 2-Pack
Aromas of blackberry and cassis, that smoky – gamy Syrah je ne sais quoi with notes of coffee, cinnamon and caramel. The entry is rich and plush, the middle slightly tart and chewy and the finish long with some lingering tannin. This wine is a little bigger than the Estate, and is just starting to come into its own.
N/A The Duke 10 750ml 2-Pack
2007 Zinfandel, Meeks Hilltop Ranch, Sonoma Valley 750ml 2-Pack
The concentrated blackberry fruit aromas with hints of raspberry, cherry, cinnamon and black pepper say classic “Zin.” The entry is smooth and full, and the mid-palate has great flavor intensity (Zintensity?). The finish is bright, with great flavor persistence. 2007 was a dream year weather-wise, and this wine shows off all of the inherent quality of the vintage. It drinks beautifully now and should last several more years.
2007 Zinfandel, Sonoma Valley 750ml 2-Pack
Blackberry fruit with notes of chocolate, cinnamon, coffee and tar. Big, sweet entry, chewy tannins, big mid-palate fruit – like a dark chocolate covered raspberry.
