Takes Wine to Know Wine
Yes, it’s true that Craig is a third generation vine grower – in fact, it was his father who founded Sunridge nurseries – but we think his lineage goes further than that. We have reason to believe that Craig’s family itself descended from vines. Why else would Craig devote his life to fermenting grapes? Why else would he age his wine in luxurious French, American, and Hungarian oak barrels? Why else would he visit these barrels nightly and whisper, “Good, my sweet, dear boys”?
Just to clarify: we’re not entirely sure if that last thing has ever actually happened. But it could, and that’s the important part!
Still, if you want clear, concrete evidence, you need look no further than the 2009 Sextant Central Coast Cabernet Sauvignon. Smell this vibrant red wine and your nose is greeted with a bouquet of roses. Then, take a sip and taste the ripe summer plums, black currants, and succulent figs. With its additional notes of pepper and espresso, velvety tannins, and smooth finish that is interwoven with mellow tinges of oak, you can see what Paul is doing here; he’s making a wine delicious enough to bring about a new level peace and harmony between human and vine-kind!
Or maybe he’s trying to make a Cab Sav that is reminiscent of left-bank Bordeaux opulence while imbued with its own Californian elegance. But c’mon, that’s way less fun to think about.
