The Kind Of Crazy That Doesn’t Use A Chainsaw
The team at Scheid Vineyards sent us a little bio about themselves, you know. It starts with their mission statement, a quote from John Ruskin: “Quality is never an accident. It is always the result of intelligent effort.” Pretty cool, right? But they didn’t stop there.
We also got three paragraphs telling us alllll about John Ruskin’s life. How he wrote, loved, lost, fell to depression, went nuts, formed a Utopian community, and more. It was a marvelous tangent that had absolutely nothing to do with their bottles, and that’s how we’re sure of two things. The first, that Scheid Vineyards is full of brilliant lunatics just like us, and the second, that Scheid Vineyards will make sure every detail of this White Sampler 4-Pack is above and beyond what a delicious wine should require.
It’s quality they’re stressing, the quality that only comes from a manic obsession. You’ll taste it in the 2008 Gewürztraminer, lurking between the flavors of apple, mango, pineapple and a note of spice. You’ll taste it in the 2008 Sauvignon Blanc, among the hints of melon, passion fruit, citrus and clean strawgrass. It’ll be in the 2008 Chardonnay, full flavored and smooth, with a highlight of butterscotch and toasty oak against aromas of pineapple, passion fruit and melon. And the 2008 Pinot Gris? Well, it’ll be there too, even if you call it a Pinto Grigio. “Po-ta-to, po-tah-to!” they told us, just before mentioning how the citrus and tropical fruit roll into the crisp lemon zest of the finish. Isn’t that charming? A wine that’s confident enough to not care what you think!
The Scheid Vineyards White Sampler 4-Pack might be born from madmen, but then again, so were symphonies, paintings, technology and the deeper ideas that make our species so grand. As you know from our own writing, we’re pretty comfortable with this specific brand of crazy. Maybe you will be too?
