1979 Sanford & Benedict Cabernet Sauvignon, Santa Ynez Valley 750ml 2-Pack
Here is a piece of California wine history in a bottle. Perfectly stored. Sanford and Benedict were pioneers in the Santa Barbara wine region. They planted some of the first Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines in Sta. Rita Hills, now widely recognized as one of the finest sites for these varietals in California. They also made Cabernet Sauvignon.
The 1979 Sanford & Benedict Cabernet Sauvignon is from an important, historic vineyard in California history. Located in the Santa Ynez Valley (the sub-appellation was renamed Santa Rita Hills in 2006), this was one of the first vineyards planted in the windswept, cool climate hills toward Lompoc.
The vineyard was planted by Richard Sanford and Michael Benedict. Ultimately, the partners separated and Cabernet was replanted in favor of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The wine has been perfectly cellared for 35 years and only 20 cases remain of this special wine.
The wine shows quite a bit of pyrazine on the nose (bell pepper) but there remains some fruit and leather and intriguing tertiary notes. If you like Bordeaux, try this wine.
