If it’s not Pellegrini, just say Mer-no!
“I guess, ever since I had that 2007 Cloverdale Ranch Merlot Alexander Valley,” says Gil Hartsman, “I just expected they would all have bright cherry fruit on the nose and a rich chocolate finish, you know?”
Hartsman suffers from a common condition known as PPFSRD - Post Pellegrini Family Standard-Raising Disorder. “All I did was have the 2007 Cloverdale and then move on to the 2009 Pellegrini Brothers Heritage Collection Merlot,” he said. “The 2009’s toasty oak and cedar from the oak barrel aging, the concentrated fruit flavors of strawberry, red cherry and raspberry, it all tasted so great at the time. Little did I know how damning they would be, how it would ruin me for all other vineyards.”
According to Dr. John Christopher, the medical term for what Hartsman experienced is the “Double Whammy.” “Just one bottle of Pellegrini Families Merlot can raise standards to dangerous levels, but two? Forget it. It’s over. Those standards are just too high for your everyday Merlot.”
But luckily, for Hartsman and others like him, there is hope. “As long as Pellegrini keeps making Merlot, I have a reason to keep drinking Merlot,” he said. “I’m determined, and with Pellegrini’s help, I’ll get through this.”
