Features
This is the most serious version of Gemellaia to date. The cooler conditions of the vintage contributed amazing complexity and intensity to the wine. Gemellaia has always been about texture on the palate, and this version delivers pure silk. The nose of cassis, cherry, caramel, and mint is haunting. The palate delivers dark fruit covered in chocolate with a touch of sweet vanilla and exotic spices.
Winemaker’s Notes: With rather perfect low sugar ripeness in 2011, we were able to steer Gemellaia towards the super-tuscan ideal that has been its inspiration from the start. The 2011 White Hawk Sangiovese evolved in Boutes barrels to an aromatic delicacy, the source of much of this wine's classic profile. The Margarita Vineyard Merlot was picked very early to emphasize the Bordelais character of the variety. Aggressively tannic and harsh in its early months, it followed a typical right-bank Merlot maturation, with tannin and herbal notes giving way to pure fruit and sensual texture over the 18 months it spent in a new Sylvain puncheon. Petit Verdot has always added a touch of a bass note to the mix, grounding the blend as a solidly structured powerhouse.

The journey in creating Giornata started with a dream to create wines from Italian grapes grown in California employing the sensibility and philosophy of Italian winemaking. We work with the same grape vines (clonal material) as the best producers in Italy. The Central Coast of California possesses many of the attributes of the top wine growing regions of Italy.
Our winemaking style leans more Italian than Californian in that we favor wines with balance and subtlety rather than intensity and extraction. We pick our grapes at lower sugar levels and handle our must gently in the cellar, thus resulting in wines that belong on the Italian dinner table possessing both ample acidity and tannin. Traveling to Italy on a regular basis, we continue to receive feedback on our efforts while researching Italian winemaking and viticultural methods.
