This Expression 38° comes from the Sonoma Coast, and no, the name does NOT refer to the temperature at which it should be served. A Chardonnay at six degrees above freezing? Let’s not be silly. No, this vineyard derives its moniker from its latitudinal coordinates. Located at 38° North by 122° West, it has cool temperatures and high rainfall, which allow for slow grape maturation and optimal ripeness. These factors are all important, and you should make sure to not buy wines from any of the following imposter latitudes.
38° North by 122° East - This location lies between the Korean peninsula and mainland China. Neither of these areas are well known for their Chardonnays, or even wine in general. Coupled with the fact that these coordinates lie in the middle of The Yellow Sea makes grape cultivation challenging at best.
38° South by 122° West - The numbers sound inviting at first, but this point lies deep in the Atlantic Ocean. About a thousand miles from Rapa Nui, you’d be hard pressed to find any grapes, fresh water, food, or chance of survival. Definite pass.
38° South by 122° East - This spot lies a few hundred kilometers off the southern coast of Australia. While it’s true that the prominence of Australian wines has really been emerging over the last three decades, these specific coordinates are unlikely to produce much of quality, as they, too, are in the middle of the ocean.
