What Did Humans Ever Do For You, Anyway?

With so many robots out of work, does it really make sense to buy a wine that was hand-picked?

Walk the streets today and you’ll see them: the robots of the 70s and 80s. Remember them? We sold them a dream of Cylons and The Terminator, a world where they were the driving force behind all major decisions and actions. They grew up watching Westworld and The Black Hole and knowing, just knowing, that one day they would be the ones in charge. But now? Now the Thomas Alexander Winery turns around and slaps those robots across their often-faceless metal faces.

Because these three bottles of Rhone Inspired 2009 Les Origines didn’t begin with nuclear-powered metal claws. This wine began with hand-picked grapes- by human hands! -from the early morning harvest, crushed and cooled before the onset of fermentation began. And this wine wasn’t carried by harsh cyber-creatures to some futuristic metal cans. Nope, the Thomas Alexander Winery uses wooden French Oak barrels, in a regimen that allows for a better balance between grape and oak organoleptic properties. Do you think a robot would ever come up with a word as unwieldy as organoleptic? Or flavors that mix soft mineral notes with the spice of dark plums and berries? Or a nose with wild berries and a hint of oaken forest? That’s the kind of thing only a human could do!

The 2009 Les Origines was made to reproduce the Old World style of the Southern Rhone and Chateauneuf du Pape, and that’s wonderful, but what place is there for robots in a classic Old World design? We told them they’d be crushing our civilizations and invading our moon bases, not waiting on the corner with tomorrow’s trash. Remember, please, that buying this Thomas Alexander Rhone-Inspired Red 2009 Les Origines is like telling a robot it just doesn’t matter, or telling the world that classic tradition is more important than eye-catching chrome.

Please, think of the robots.

Les Origines is a combination of power and finesse, and could be said to be more European in style.  By that, it exhibits the Terroir of the vineyard - oak forest on the nose, and hints of chalky limestone on the mid-palate.  An alluring nose of wild berries with a hint of oak forest; on the palate - spicy, dark plums and berries with subtle mineral notes of chalk & limestone followed by a structured finish with ripe tannins and ample texture. The aim was to reproduce a California wine that is faithful to the Southern Rhone and Chateauneuf du Pape.

Thomas Pitchon’s handcrafted small production Rhone wines are already among the best of the region...

Thomas Alexander Winery is a small production (500 cases total) boutique winery specializing in Rhone style wines.

I started in the cellar for Clos LaChance winery, located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, working the 1999 and 2000 harvest. Then completed my Enology degree from Fresno State in 2003 and worked as an intern for Rosenblum Cellars in Alameda. In 2004 I became the Assistant winemaker under Jeff Cohn, and in 2005, I became the winemaker, working through the 2008 Harvest.
After Rosenblum sold to Diageo Corporation. I decided to move to Paso Robles to start my new label Thomas Alexander Winery. I chose Paso Robles because of my passion for working with Rhone varietals.

My passion for Rhone varietals was acknowledged through the production of 90+ point Wine Spectator Syrahs and Petite Sirahs at Rosenblum, and fueled by spending most of my pay check at great Rhone importers like Kermit Lynch and North Berkeley. As they were on the way home to San Francisco, it was irresistible not to stop in.
