Is “Suicide” painless?

Listen, you COULD combine all these wines into one mega-wine. But don’t.

It may have been fun when you were a kid to combine all the sodas at a fountain in one cup. Many call this melting-pot beverage a “Suicide.” Others, apparently, a “Bug Juice” or “Swamp Juice.” But a disgusting drink by any other name would taste as sickly-sweet. And we adults know better, right?

Right?

So look, we know that we lose control over what happens to this Ranchero Cellars Paso Sampler once we ship it to you. You could drink it, use it to give your sugar glider a bath – whatever you choose to do. So we’re just asking you, at a basic human level: Please do not mix these together into a wine-variant “Bug Juice.”

We’re not trying to over-reach our position here, and we understand you need your space to make your own decisions. We totally understand that and, again, the choice is ultimately yours to make. But please, before you gleefully pop all three corks and dump the bottles into a large punch bowl, just think for a second about what you’re doing.

If you HAVE to do it, just be reasonable. Mix the two whites together, but please…please not the red. You know what, we shouldn’t even have raised that as a possibility. Just enjoy each of these wines on their own. They’re great, and you’re going to enjoy them all individually. Especially if you splash in a little Diet Dr. Pepper.

The centerpiece of this wine – the dominant variety in the blend – is Grenache Blanc. By itself, Grenache Blanc has a limited amount of fruit character, but expresses its terroir with charm and aplomb.  To fill gaps in the texture of the wine, Ranchero Cellars used Viognier from the same vineyard that had been fermented on its skins. This component lends a plush viscosity and a mouth-watering grip to the wine, while the ripe and honeyed floral notes of the Viognier beautifully round out the lean and seamless structure of the Grenache Blanc. It was a blend that asked to be made.

2010 Viognier, La Vista Vineyard, Paso Robles

  • Blend: 100% Viognier

Viognier can be an elusive creature.  Its characteristic floral aroma can sometimes be overblown, and its fleshy, rich mouthfeel can, from the wrong vineyard or in the wrong hands, become bitter and downright heavy.  Ranchero Cellars found a site at the beautiful Westside Paso Robles vineyard, called La Vista, that provided enough heat to ripen Viognier to honeyed perfection, while at the same time allowing it to maintain the acidity and freshness that come from cool nights and thoughtful canopy management.  Texture. Layers. Intense aromatics.  Minerality.  Brightness. Richness. Voila.

2009 Carignan, Old Vines, Colombini Vineyard

  • Blend: 100% Carignan
  • Appellation: Mendocino County
  • Alcohol: 14.8%
  • T.A.:   6.2 g/L
  • pH: 3.65
  • R.S.: 2.0 g/L
  • Cooperage: 25% New American Oak
  • Bottle Date:  6/24/11
  • Release Date: 7/15/11
  • Production:  141 cases

Hailing from a low-yielding site in Redwood Valley, the grapes that made this wine have been grown as a labor of love now by three generations of the Colombini family. In this vineyard, the clusters hang from vines that easily stand up to Carignan’s reputation as a wild and uncivilized variety.  The wine is tannic, acidic, tightly wound, and above all, unique.  The oak shows itself with smoky toast. Old-world texture underscores the wine’s explosive and unapologetic California fruitiness.

Ranchero Cellars

Owners:
Amy Butler
Location:
Paso Robles, CA
Ranchero Cellars pays homage to the spur-jangling vaqueros of the old west, as well as to the cowboy kitsch culture of 1950s America. The wine style evokes the pastoral history of early California: old vines and dusty fields, shady oaks and goats and chickens, rusty tractors and barbed-wire fences.  I like those things.

Based in Paso Robles, Ranchero Cellars is committed to making small batches of wine using unique varietals and time-honored methods. I mean very small batches -- three barrels, made with naturally occurring yeasts, minimal processing, rounding up what nature gives me using as little rope as possible.

My hope is that you share my wine with your friends, enjoy it, love it, and close the gate on your way out.
