Milestones? The Pellegrini family has seen a few.

The brothers Nello and Gino Pellegrini must have passed thousands on their way from Tuscany to New York and then on the Sonoma County in the early 1900s. In 1933, they took advantage of a milestone in American history – the repeal of Prohibition – to establish the original Pellegrini Wine Company. In 1973, Vincent and Ida Pellegrini established a milestone of their own with the purchase of a Russian River Valley fruit orchard which they soon converted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. And today, Pellegrini Family Vineyards passes yet another milestone by appearing in the hallowed confines of Wine.Woot.

OK, so maybe that last one isn’t so momentous for the illustrious Pellegrinis. But for us, it’s a pretty huge deal.

Sure, we’re psyched any time we can feature a wine of such distinction and merit. Even if the label didn’t say “2006 Pellegrini Milestone”, we’d always have room for this mosaic of carefully selected lots of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc. You don’t find wine with this kind of depth, complexity, richness, and supple texture every day. (Believe us, we’re always looking.)

But on top of that, there’s the legacy of four generations of Pellegrini wine expertise to consider. It’s reflected in the excellence of the 2006 Pellegrini Milestone, and also in the name, which commemorates the 75th anniversary of Pellegrini Family Vineyards. Seventy-five years! It’s enough to make us wonder what Pellegrini’s doing palling around with the likes of l’il ol’ us. This occasion may not be worthy of remembrance in the Pellegrini family history, but we’re already marking it down in ours.
