A REAL red blend

Bring in 'da Nords. Bring in 'da Monk.

Drink this: When you are blazing your own trail.*

The only way to make this better would be: If it had more loams. You know. Loams.

Left unattended in an airport, this item would be mistaken for: "…Uh … contraband … that we must seize and take into this back room with some prime rib."

Legend has that when the moon is full, this wine transforms into: A Chevy El Camino. (It gets confused.)

The SNL episode hosted by this wine features a sketch in which: Somebody does something and then a clip of the sketch goes viral and Lorne Michaels makes a crapload of money somehow.

In a tell-all biography, it was revealed that this wine: Prefers whites.

*A figurative trail, of course. Don't drink and drive.

The label of this wine was inspired by the historical “El Camino Real” trail that travels north and south along the coast of California. In 1784, before California was settled, Friar Junipero Serra began a quest for Spain to establish missions along a trail they named “El Camino Real”. During its 75 years in operation, 21 missions were built, serving the indigenous Indians and the Spanish military. One of the many cultural and economic exchanges shared among the Spaniards and the Indians, were the vineyards planted to produce wine and raisins. Mission San Gabriel, near what is now Los Angeles, was the largest vineyard spanning 170 acres. In 1830, Alfred Robinson recorded that between 400 and 600 barrels of wine were produced annually at Mission San Gabriel; a relatively large production in those days. It is believed by some that these missions were responsible for establishing the first wine-grape plantings in California!!

2006 El Camino Real Red Wine, Page Nord Vineyard, Napa Valley 750ml 4-Pack

Ruby/purple in color, this wine screams Syrah; blueberry, black raspberry, earth, cocoa, spice and hints of vanilla. The Syrah brings up the front but it is the Cabernet and Merlot that bring in the structure and acid. Creamy blackberry, red cherry, currants, sage and sweet tannin dominate, yet the structure is kept in balance with judicious use of oak and mouthwatering acidity.

Vineyard: Located on a registered historic property, Page Nord Vineyards is known for its high scoring vineyard-designate wines. Winemakers reserve specific rows and help guide custom (row by row) farming practices. Located on the north bank of Dry Creek, south of Yountville, the vineyards are part of the Oak Knoll District and their soils are gravelly silt loams, drained by a gravel layer. The region still benefits from bay fog to moderate temperatures but afternoons are warm and clear.

2005 El Camino Real Red Wine, Page Nord Vineyard, Napa Valley 750ml

This bold and luscious red wine is a stand out among Syrah’s.  It is both rich and dark, and its flavors of blackberry and currants will testify for its multi-faceted, deep tone. This wine is the perfect selection to pair with the boldest delights of the table. The fruit of El Camino Real was picked at its prime from the Page Nord vineyard in the lush Napa Valley.  This is the same vineyard that produced Behrens & Hitchcock’s 2003 Syrah which was recently honored by Food and Wine Magazine as “Syrah of the Year”.

Napa, CA

A member of the Behrens Family of fine winemakers

My wife, Lori, and I have had a love of fine wines for years, and we are fortunate to have two excellent Napa Valley winemakers in the family: Lori's sister, Lisa Drinkward of Drinkward Peschon, and brother-in-law Les Behrens of Behrens Family Winery (formerly Behrens & Hitchcock). For many years I have helped Lisa and Les with crush at their beautiful Napa Valley winery at the top of Spring Mountain. Spending much of my vacation time each year, I gained hands-on knowledge of how these fine wines are made. In 2003 Les suggested that we take some of the wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon fruit from the Kenefick Ranch near Calistoga and try making our own wine. Using the skills I had learned from these highly praised winemakers, we crafted our first vintage of Nenow wines. This connection has helped us foster relationships with wonderful vineyard owners, allowing us to choose the fruit for our wine based on quality and sustainable farming practices.

From that first bottling of 224 cases of Nenow Napa Valley Kenefick Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon we have grown and added a second label called El Camino Real, inspired by the historical trail that spanned California from San Diego to the town of Sonoma. Each year I return to the Napa Valley along a similar route to harvest, crush, monitor fermentation, do punch downs by hand several time a day, press the wine off the skins and put it into French oak barrels for aging. For much of the year I rely on Lisa and Les to care for the wines as they do their own, with care and expertise, returning return as often as I can until the wine is bottled.
