Great Expectations

It's better than drinking alone.

He dreamed of a place where he didn't feel awkward. Where he didn't feel left out. Where he felt like he belonged.

A place where two lovers could sit side-by-side and just hold hands. Or not even touch at all. And by "lovers" we mean a gangly young man and a young woman with head gear, both far too nervous and socially inept to make the first move.

He'd smile. She'd make an attempt to reciprocate, but instead end up with a line of drool from the corner of her mouth to her chin. He'd try to hide his repulsed expression. She'd notice it but pretend she hadn't.

Still, the nose of big, brambly cherries and earth would float out of the wine bottle and wrap them both in baking spices and clove. He'd pour her a glass, a last-ditched effort. She'd drink it down, too fast to appreciate the combo of mountain tannins and caramel, and vow never to let her mother set her up again.

Mistaking her sigh of boredom for a moment of contentment, he'd lean in for a kiss. Too busy adjusting her rubberbands to see it coming, she'd recoil, shriek and accidentally smack her head against the passenger window.

They'd sit in pained silence for the next five minutes, and then he'd drive her home.

MEEKER KISS RIDGE. The high point of your miserable, lonely life.

2006 Kiss Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml 3-Pack

Big, brambly cherries and earth float out of the glass wrapped in baking spices and clove. The palate shines with cherry-cobbler and subtle minerality. This rolls into a round, integrated combination of mountain tannins and caramel with a clean, acidic finish. This 2006 is still a young wine. It will drink beautifully now or you can stash it in the cellar and let it get better for years. Also, as with every big, amazing Cab - if you drink it, decant it!

2005 Kiss Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml 3-Pack

The 2005 Kiss Ridge Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon has broad, structured fruit characteristics highlighted by bright Bing cherries, red fruit, and accented with subtle earthy notes and layers of dried tobacco. The palate is velvety, carrying the fruit forward with well-balanced acidity and hints of French oak and espresso beans. A pervasive structure of softened tannins provides excellent aging potential and a long, lingering finish.

2004 Kiss Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml 3-Pack

This wine leaps out of the glass with a huge nose of big spice and black currant and dark cherries. These elements carry forward on the palate along with plum, coffee and earth, all surrounded by toasty French oak. The finish is silky and long. All in all a great expression of an excellent vintage.

Vineyards: Tom and Theresa Wajnert’s 40-year-old block of Cabernet Sauvignon vines grace a north-facing slope in the revered Diamond Mountain District of the Napa Valley. These vines are monstrous: some up to eight or nine feet tall, yet the vigor necessary for this site naturally limits the yield to a shade over 2 tons/acre.

Technique: Sub-45° F cold soak, 2 month extended maceration, pumpovers twice daily, TA correction to .75 g/100ml, 15 day cold ferment.

The structure and character of the grape tannins from this vineyard are outstanding, regularly producing huge cherry fruit with earthy baking spices. Meeker Vineyards tries not to get in the way of that while extracting as much phenolic character as possible.

The grapes for “Kiss Ridge Vineyard” Cabernet Sauvignon come from 40 year-old vines that grow on the five-acre vineyard of Tom and Theresa Wajnert. This vineyard sits on the top of the high slopes of Diamond Mountain, where the fog of Sonoma County kisses the sunny ridge of the Napa Valley. Some of the most sought after Napa Valley wines are those that come from the Diamond Mountain appellation. Winemaker Matt Blankenheim describes the vineyard as “a winemaker’s dream.” At 1250 feet elevation, the vineyard is blessed with gravelly loam soil, 20% slopes, full sun exposure, hot days, cool nights, and a perfect breeze that blows through the vines, keeping the loose clusters of grapes free from holding the morning dew.
