Better Than "Stinky Butt"
Maybe your family is three kids and a dog. Maybe your family is 25 pilots and the head of your carrier group. Maybe your family is a winery. The truth is, as long as it's a family, people are gonna hand out nicknames like candy at Halloween. It's part of being a family.
That's how these happy little wines got their own happy little nicknames: by being part of the Mayo Family. There's "Barnstormer" with intense flavors that busted through the classic Napa style. Blackberry and chocolate with a kiss of oak, and grapes from two different vineyards. Close by is The Gypsy, a.k.a. "Jessica's Cuvee." Since we only know Mayo Family members Jeff and Mike, we don't really know who Jessica is, but inside jokes... well, THOSE are part of being a family too, right? Because who knows you better than the people who are always at your side? That goes for "Antonio's Cuvee" too, by the way.
It doesn't matter if you want something to pair with your pasta or something to keep your winter BBQ's company. A family looks after its own. Prep your palate to become part of something bigger than yourself.
And maybe, one day, they'll stop being so secretive about what those names mean. C'mon, Jeff and Mike! Share with the class!
Features
2007 Cabernet Sauvignon "Barnstormer" Napa Valley 750ml
From the outstanding 2007 vintage, this Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was produced from grapes grown in two separate vineyards. One, a hillside vineyard, delivered grapes with outstanding tannins and intense fruit characteristics. The second vineyard is located on the floor of the Napa Valley where the grapes were richly flavored with lesser amounts of tannin. The result is a superbly balanced, intensely flavored wine that you'll recognize as classically Napa. Blackberry and chocolate notes are combined with a kiss of oak over a medium bodied structure.
2009 The Gypsy, GSM Sonoma Valley "Jessica's Cuvee" 750ml
This is the first GSM ever made at Mayo Family Winery. After a great deal of trials, Mayo Family came up with a blend of 70% Grenache, 29% Syrah and 1% Mourvedre. Jeff and Mike looked at each other and nodded... they had it. The new wine called "The Gypsy" unearths a beautiful selection of cranberry, strawberry and blueberry aromas along with hints of caramel and sweet summer herbs. Mayo Family LOVES this wine and thinks you'll find it a unique and appropriate pair for your upcoming barbecues, winter stews and grilled meats.
2009 Zinfandel, "Antonio's Cuvee" Unti Vineyard, Old Vines, Dry Creek Valley 750ml
The 2009 Unti Vineyard Zinfandel possesses what Mayo Family Winery considers a classic Dry Creek Valley Signature. Raspberry, cranberry and pepper dominate the nose and are fairly effusive. The aromas in this wine, upon pouring are quite active. On the palate you first notice a fairly impressive structure that accommodates a layering of dark berry flavors, more pepper (Mayo Family call it the “Dry Creek Pepper”) and the slightest notes of licorice leading to a sweet finish. The fruit on the palate is fairly explosive and upfront, but what makes this wine interesting and accommodating to the cook is the wine’s structure, which will allow it to pair very nicely with grilled meats and rich pasta dishes.

Mayo Family Winery
- Founded:
- 1993
- Owners:
- Henry & Diane Mayo
- Location:
- Glen Ellen, CA
Diane Mayo, after a lifetime of living in or around Sonoma Valley, decided in 1990 to raise some grapes. Her husband, Henry, cleared off a beautiful valley and in 1990 planted 3,000 Chardonnay vines. In 1993 they bottled their first 200 cases and discovered that it was very good. The following year, 1,200 cases were produced, and they were overwhelmed. Henry still had his day job as the Real Estate Broker with Frank Howard Allen, so they picked up the phone and called their son, Jeffrey--the rest is history! Today they love the wines that Michael Berthoud is making and they love their Sonoma Valley...making it all a match made in heaven.
