Duck ... Duck ... Gooseberry!

Tonight's lesson in wine: talking Gooseberry.

We were describing this 2010 Le Petit Coquerel Sauvignon Blanc to some of our friends, and we kept getting stuck on a key part of its description: Gooseberry.

When Gooseberry is plural, how do you say it? Is it "gooseberries" or "geeseberry"? Or dare we suggest maybe it's "geeseberries"?

This turned into a heated debate, and we concluded it must be one of the three.

We turned our attention to the internet and did a brief amount of research, where we quickly discovered that it's gooseberries. Makes sense, we guess, but also it sort of feels wrong.

Why, for our entire life, would people tell us it's geese not goose if that doesn't apply to the berries as well? See: IT MAKES NO SENSE.

But that's what the man's telling us, and who are we to disagree with the man? So we guess we'll just accept it and move on and distract ourselves with this 2010 Le Petit Coquerel Sauvignon Blanc, and all of its ... gooseberries.

Features

2010 Le Petit Coquerel Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley 750ml 6-Pack

The 2010 Le Petit Coquerel is a pure expression of Sauvignon Blanc. It has a nose of gooseberry and grapefruit. The wine mouth feel is crisp and bright with a creamy round mid palate followed by a long finish of exotic fruit, lychee, and papaya. The wine is delicious to enjoy alone or with light fare such as seafood, sushi, cheeses, mild curries or any Asian cuisine.

After hand harvesting on September 22nd in the early morning, the fruit was de-stemmed and gently pressed, the juice settled and was fermented in stainless steel barrels. The wine was then aged sur lie for seven months, with frequent stirring to develop roundness, body and texture. 80% of the fruit for the Le Petit Coquerel was sourced from an organic, dry-farmed Sauvignon Blanc vineyard in Yountville, and the remaining 20% of the fruit was from the Cockerells' dry-farmed, old vine estate vineyard in Calistoga. The wine was bottled on May 2, 2011.

Vintage Notes: 2010 was a cool year and was very challenging for growing grapes. Calistoga experienced low temperatures throughout the spring. Summer brought more cold foggy mornings which created high humidity and increased disease pressure threatening the grapes. Botrytis and mildew were of special concern. The vineyard was protected by hand thinning the canopy while leaving leaves around the clusters. Fortunately, these outer leaves protected the crop from destruction during two days of extreme heat spikes near the end of August. The temperatures returned to unseasonably cool levels, and the fruit was checked almost daily from mid August until harvest to ensure the optimal accumulation of sugar for ripeness while closely monitoring the crop for disease.

Founded:
2005
Location:
Calistoga, CA
It began as a dream to produce a superb Sauvignon Blanc in the Napa Valley modeled on the best traditions of the incredible Bordeaux blancs of France. In 2005 we were fortunate to locate a beautiful estate vineyard in Calistoga which was planted over 50 years ago on St. George rootstock. Back dropped by the Palisades, the old vines thrive in this dry-farmed vineyard which has deep soil that is well suited to growing Sauvignon Blanc.

The result -- our first estate grown wine Terroir Coquerel, followed by Le Petit Coquerel, and in 2008 our estate grown late harvest Sauvignon Blanc, La Douce Revanche. Each wine is distinctive and delicious, reflecting individually the terroir of our original Calistoga vineyard and of the elegant flavors unique to Sauvignon Blanc. One thing led to another, and as the wines received recognition, the question became, "Do you make a red wine?" As luck would have it, a vineyard property adjacent to our vineyard became available that was planted almost entirely in red varietals -- Petite Sirah, Merlot, and Tempranillo. In 2008, 2009, and 2010 we added three more wines and will add a fourth wine, Tempranillo in 2011. We think you will also enjoy our Coquerel La Petite Sirah, Merlot, and Verdelho. Each is a beautiful wine and is a delicious addition to the Coquerel family of wines.
