Wine.Woot purchases now bypass your cart entirely! This means you gotta buy Wine.Woot items on their own, using your Amazon Payments account. You can't mix 'em up with stuff from our other sites. This cowboy's ridin' solo.

Be aware that anything in your cart from the other Woot sites is still out there and looking forward to your return. We'd hate for anything to sell out while you're reading this.

Stone Cold

Wine that (is made from grapes that grow in the) rocks!

You don't sink roots in the rocky soil of the windswept cliffs high above the Kunde Family Estate by accident. You've got to want it. Other vines loll in rich, comfy loam in gently rolling vineyards. They'll never know what it's like to grow up caught between the hostile gusts and the cruel stone, to struggle all their lives just to produce a few bunches of small, hardy grapes.

And they'll never know the glory of the Kunde Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. This is the kind of dense, concentrated power that can only be honed through months of grueling battle against a harsh, indifferent world. A rich perfume of blackberries, spice, and olives sharpens into flavors of cherry, cassis, and dark chocolate. Plush becomes chewy becomes silky, every one redolent of an indomitable will to survive. The Kunde Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon's dynamic character doesn't come easily - but what worthwhile ever does?

2007 Kunde Family Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma Valley 750ml 2-Pack

High on the hillsides above Kunde Family Estate are several blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot that begin at an elevation of 800 feet, clinging to a steep slope that ends in a rock-strewn plateau some 400 feet above. The vines that live here are small and hearty; they have to be tough to send down their roots through all that rock! Although yields are low, the payoff comes in dark colored, concentrated fruit. This is a powerful wine, with a sultry nose of blackberries, spice, and olives. The flavors of cherries, cassis, and dark chocolate are held in a rich texture that comes from an excellent tannin structure.

A big, dense, concentrated wine, the 2007 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is hand crafted from the windswept terraced vineyards high on top of Kunde Family Estate. The wine shows an amazing mix of aromas and flavors, from blackberries and spice in the nose to rich cherries, cassis, and dark chocolate on the palate. The dynamic fruit character is given greater complexity by the plush, chewy tannin structure that turns silky on the palate, ensuring ageability in the bottle for many years to come.

Winemaking:
In 2007, heat experienced in the early Fall pushed the white grapes to rapid ripeness, but the later-ripening Bordeaux reds were able to shrug off the heat and matured beautifully without excessive sugars.

Upon crushing, several of the lots had a 2 to 3 day cold soak while yeast was added to other lots the day after crushing. Longer pumpovers were used at the beginning of fermentation, with a few lots receiving delestage. As the tannins became full, the pumpovers were shortened.

The wine was aged for 19 months in French, Hungarian, and American oak barrels (70% new), and bottled in August 2009.

The Kunde Family
Founded:
1904
Location:
Sonoma Valley, CA

At Kunde Family Estate, our winemaking mission is to craft elegant wines with a real sense of place—beautifully balanced and expressive of our dramatic vineyard landscape.

For over a century, five generations of the Kunde Family have farmed our 1,850 acre-estate in the heart of Sonoma Valley—a truly remarkable legacy in the modern age of California winemaking. A fervent, forward-thinking vision of land stewardship and sustainability began over one hundred years ago, and has been shaped with each successive generation.

Today, Kunde Family Estate is still family owned and operated with a hands-on team of 4th and 5th generation family members at the helm. At the end of the day, every decision we make, every wine we craft, and every experience we provide honors the legacy of founder Louis Kunde, who emigrated from Germany and purchased the original Wildwood Vineyards ranch at the turn of the century in 1904. Cresting the second century was a profound milestone for the family. Moving forward, we remain committed to innovation and state-of-the-art facilities, while also maintaining a deep, personal commitment to sustainable winegrowing and preserving the land for generations to come.

Top Comments are discussion forum posts we have deemed worthy of your time. Listen, we get a lot of comments, and most of the time, it's pretty forgettable stuff; but sometimes you rise to the top like butterfat in milk. We don't recommend you base your self-worth on how often we feature your comments, but we don't expressly forbid it either.
