Boom Boom Low
So similar, yet so different. 2008 and 2009 were sharply opposed in the way only close siblings could be. One had the Olympics, the other had the World Baseball Classic. One had 366 days, the other 365. They were even presided over by different presidents (but we're not touching that one). 2008's top song was the computerized club banger "Low" by Flo Rida, while 2009's was... the computerized club banger "Boom Boom Pow" by the Black-Eyed Peas. OK, the two years weren't entirely different.
In the Willamette Valley Pinor Noir fields of Johan Vineyards, '08 was a pretty typical year while '09 was a fry-your-eggs-on-the-sidewalk scorcher. And you can taste the difference in years in these two bottles. The Aught-Eight is dark and brooding; the Zero-Nine is full and ripe and slightly lower in alcohol. Both are fine examples of the classic Pinot Style, and both are available here at a price you haven't paid for wine this good since well before the Black-Eyed Peas hit it big.

2008 Pinot Noir, Nils Reserve Willamette Valley 750ml
The Johan Nils Reserve Pinot Noir is a barrel selection from the Johan estate. The nose displays dark cherry, black tea and mineral with a dark, brooding quality on the palate accompanied by spice and some mineral notes. Like the Estate Pinot Noir the wine is very savory. This is full of layers that will reveal themselves with some patience.

Johan Vineyards’ goal is to produce wines that showcase their unique estate vineyard and each individual growing season. They do this by minimal winemaker intervention in producing the wine. This Pinot Noir was made from a barrel selection by the winemaker. The clones in this blend are all Dijon; 115 (67%), 667 (25%) and 114 (8%). The grapes were fermented (both primary and malolactic) using exclusively native yeast, with approximately 50% whole-cluster. The wine was aged for 18 months in 100% French oak barrels; 33% were new. In line with the goals of Johan Vineyards, this Pinot Noir is made in a classic style, with a focus on balance, complexity and elegance. It clearly represents the characters and nuances of Johan Vineyards as well as the 2009 growing-season.
