Working Together

The Sterlings came together as a family to make great sparkling wines. The least you guys could do is help me clean the house once in a while.

Come on! It’s not that hard. One of you dusts, the other one vacuums, I’ll get started on the laundry and, honey, you can pick things up and take out the trash. We’ll be done in no time! What do you say? Anyone? Anyone at all?

You see, this is the problem with our family. We’re lazy. I can’t even get you all to look up from your phones or videogames or eReaders long enough to even acknowledge each other’s presence, much less get things done around here. If Audrey and Barry Sterling’s family had been this way, there’d be no Iron Horse Vineyards, you know. Their children didn’t sigh and moan when their parents handed them the reigns of one of the most prestigious independent family owned wineries in Green Valley, OH NO. They got up and they worked together to produce the great sparkling wines they’ve become known for.

Take this 2006 Classic Vintage Brut, for example. Do you think Joy Sterling whined about being too tired or too busy posting things to Facebook to learn how this wonderfully rich and creamy Brut is made? Of course not! She spent her days making memories that she’ll cherish for a lifetime just by spending time watching her folks perfect the ripe red apple, yeast, and lime flavors contained within the bottle.

And I bet you anything that Laurence Sterling wasn’t so fixated with some warfare video game that he couldn’t be bothered to help out with the 2006 Russian Cuvée. In fact, I bet he was more than willing to learn the secrets of making such an opulent, slightly sweet sparkling wine that gives you caramel, vanilla and warm milk on the nose while exciting the taste buds with mandarin orange and custard flavors combined with a creamy mouthfeel.

Those kids? They grew up to be the CEO and the Director of Operations of Iron Horse Wineries. I’m not even asking you to do THAT much. I just want the house to look nice every once in a while! We’ll even get ice cream afterwards! Can we do it? Aw, forget it. Just hand me a glass and a wine opener.

The most traditional of the Iron Horse Sparklings. A classy blend of 68% Pinot Noir and 32% Chardonnay, aged an average of four years on the yeast in the bottle. Wonderfully rich and creamy, it sends all kinds of memory bells that say "champagne," though the fruit is unmistakably Green Valley of Russian River Valley. It is vintage quality in every sense of the word.

By nose: Hazel nut and ripe red apple. By mouth: Ripe red apple, yeast and a touch of lime. Best when served with food, pair with anything spicy, salted or fried. Great with comfort food; mac and cheese, french fries, popcorn, peanuts, potato chips and onion dip, sushi and roast chicken.

The same base wine as Classic Vintage Brut, but with a richer dosage, which makes it more opulent, slightly sweeter and heightens the fruit. Originally designed for the historic Reagan-Gorbachev Summit Meetings ending the Cold War. According to USA Today, "an intertwining of the arts of diplomacy and gastronomy."

By nose: Caramel, vanilla and warm milk. By mouth: mandarin orange, custard and a rich creamy mouth feel. A perfect aperitif by itself and for a great cocktail, simply add a few pomegranate seeds to the flute. Pair with rich foods such a foie gras, as well as sweet and sour sauces and anything prepared with exotic spices, including curries and chilies. Also great with a BLT.
