learnings

The “Harvest Moon” is the closest full moon to the autumnal equinox, and not, as many believe, when the moon is pregnant with a baby moon.

SOME FACTS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT THE MOON:

Someday the moon will crash into the Earth. That day is Wednesday.

The Smashing Pumpkins video "Tonight" was actually shot on the Moon, but used a set and a gravity-amplification machine to replicate the conditions of Earth.

The so-called "golf" that U.S. astronauts played on the moon was not actually golf, but an identical sport without a name.

"Waxing gibbous" is not as dirty as it sounds.

The Earth's tides are caused by the moon, but nobody understands why and nobody cares.

If you touched the moon with your hand it would freeze, shatter, and unleash a swarm of scarabs. That's science.

It's much easier to find your toddler who is lost in the brambles when the moon is full.

The moon's cycles have bizarre and utterly unpredictable effects on women's feelings toward astronomy.

Contrary to the contrary belief that the moon is NOT made of cheese, the moon is made of cheese.

The closest the moon gets to the Earth is 362,570 km, per court fiat.

2013 Sonoma Harvest Red Wine, Sonoma County 750ml 6-Pack

As Sonoma County residents, we feel we live in a very special place, where the Pacific sea breeze flows through our mighty redwoods, where people stroll rather than sprint through life, and where every table beckons for the convergence of great wine and great food.

We created this unique blend of equal parts Sonoma County Zinfandel with equal parts Pinot Noir for your dinner table.  A true 50/50 relationship.

Fresh spring strawberry and Hawaiian hibiscus aromas greet at the approach.  Light, electric red hue denotes the elegance in body and mouthfeel.  Tart cherry, roasted cumin/Mexican spices and an interesting brown herbal note pull in behind. Since this wine was aged in mostly 4 year old mature barrels, there isn’t a strong presence of oak flavor.  Drink from Fall of ’15 forward.  I know I’ll be enjoying until 2018-2020.

Winegrower’s Notes: Coming off the incredible 2012 vintage, the 2013 growing season was equally as fruitful.  The Spring launched the season off with above average heat but cooler temperatures throughout Sonoma County in late July and early August slowed the pace of grape ripening, allowing more time for fruit to mature on the vines and giving winegrowers and winemakers more time to prepare.  The fruit for this unique blend comes from multiple vineyards grown all over the fog-drenched Russian River Valley.

The two varietals were fermented and barreled separate for the first year’s ageing then gently racked together on month 11 for successful marrying during the final 5 months.  In summer of 2014, my crew and I bottled approximately 600 cases of promise.  To my knowledge, this is the only blend of Zin and Pinot Noir representing a true 50/50 blend.  I’ve been told that in blending the royal stature of Pinot Noir with the oft burly and unpredictable nature of Zin is a bad idea and that I might be “going to a bad place”.  As usual, I blended my two favorite varietals based on intuition.  The result?  I invite you to open one up and find out.

The Harvest Moon: the moon at and about the period of fullness that is nearest to the autumnal equinox.  In the legend of the Harvest moon, it is said that all full moons have their own special characteristics based primarily on the whereabouts of the ecliptic in the sky at the time of year that these moons are visible.

Harvest Moon Estate and Winery was founded on growing, producing and bottling world-class Russian River Valley wine in a balanced, elegant style. Our premise is that Russian River Valley Zinfandel can be just as layered and complex as any Pinot Noir or Bordeaux variety in the world and receive the same respect.  The Pitts family has grown quality grapes in the Russian River Valley since 1976. In 2000, son Randy reverse migrated from San Francisco back to Sonoma County to assume the farming responsibilities at the family's modest nine-acre ranch. In conjunction with lessons on farming by his Dad and a few viticulture/enology courses at the local junior college, Randy made a barrel of homemade Zinfandel off the ranch's back block which turned out exceptionally tasty. Quickly concluding that properly farmed and judiciously fermented, Zinfandel has great capabilities of being California's own wine nobility.  The growers-turned winemakers birthed their inaugural vintage in 2002 and look forward to making their Zinprint on the winescene for decades to come.

In addition to growing Zinfandel, Harvest Moon also hand crafts small amounts of Russian River Valley Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir and Dry Creek Cabernet Sauvignon.
