Guys R Pique

Because a day without wine is like a trampoline without wine.

Wine.Woot presents "The More you Vino:" A handy wine glossary!

Wine: A truth serum, dining companion, and occasional headache delivery system.

Cabernet Sauvignon: A French grape known for its full-bodied characteristics, aging potential, and combative temper. Prone to "Sauvignon Rage Syndrome." The best way to prevent this is by talking to your wine - especially in the presence of others, when your wine is more likely to become agitated.

Grape: A berry. Giver of wine. Contributor of the third-best Jolly Rancher flavor.

Arkoudaphobia: Fear of bears.

Mouthfeel: A descriptor for wine's texture on the tongue. Not to be confused with "eyesmell."

Palate: Correct. That's how many bottles of this wine you should buy. A pallet.

Aroma: This is the room where you drink wine.

Crepitus: The sound of two bones rubbing against each other. Gross, huh?

Drinking window: Your mouth.

Features

2009 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley 750ml 2-Pack

In our Reserve Cabernet we showcase the exquisite strength and depth of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. Revered for the longevity of the wines it creates, this grape is prized for its adaptability and capacity to both grow and thrive in a tremendously diverse range of climates. From France, to Italy to California, to Australia, South America, and even China Cabernet is synonymous with ‘fine red wine.’ The interplay of ripe, dark-flesh fruits, robust tannin, earth and spice characters give the wine broad appeal and versatility in food pairing. We find that the Alexander Valley with its ideal combination of soil, climate, water availability, clonal selection, and viticultural heritage grows fruit of exceptional distinction and quality worthy of this bottling.

Growing Season: The 2009 vintage was marked by a very cool spring and summer growing season with moderate summer heat. Interestingly this steady climate allowed the grapes to mature evenly over the season without any dramatic temperature fluctuations. The canopy of the vines stayed active later than is typical and delayed our first harvest until into October (in some vintages we begin as early as late August). A delightful consequence of the cool temperatures was the development of intense color pigments that were easily extracted in the early days of fermentation. Cool temperatures also led to slower accumulation of sugar and the appearance of ripe flavors at somewhat lower than typical sugar levels. The finished wines show balance and restraint – an apt reflection of the vintage.

Vineyard Description: Benchland and hillside vineyards are the choicest of sites for growing rich, concentrated, varietally distinct Cabernet Sauvignon in the Alexander Valley. Our most prized sites sit on the eastern bench facing westward and the vine rows run vertically down the hillsides rather than being terraced across. This row direction mitigates the direct afternoon sun exposure on the berries and minimizes sunburn and shriveling, but optimizes ripening and flavor development.

Geyser Peak Winery

Founded:
1880
Owner:
Accolade Wines
Location:
Geyersville, CA
One of California’s oldest and most renowned wineries, Geyser Peak Winery was founded in 1880 by Augustus Quitzow, a pioneer in Alexander Valley winemaking, Geyser Peak has flourished as an award-winning winery for more than 130 years. Quitzow chose the original winery site in Geyserville for its vantage point of the famed Geysers Geothermal area. The white steam that billowed from the geysers along the mountain slopes provided the winery with a spectacular ‘view of the clouds’.

Today, Geyser Peak pays fond tribute to its past roots in Alexander Valley as it sets forth on a new path into the Dry Creek Valley Appellation where the winery has recently relocated. Although the address is new, the commitment to the highest quality artisan winemaking is not. Geyser Peak will continue to “Reach For Peak” for many years to come.
