A Circus Of Flavor

As a professional vine tamer for a major wine circus, I have to give respect to this Gauthier Los Chamizal Zinfandel. It's quite entertaining.

I remember the first time I stepped into a vineyard with a chair and a whip. My father said "Boy, don't let the grapes see that you're afraid. If you don't keep them in line, they'll turn on you."

I've been extra careful ever since that day, and always left the vineyard in one piece. That's why I can respect the hard work that went into the 2001 Los Chamizal Sonoma Valley Zinfandel 3-Pack. Much like a lion can be made to ride a bicycle, so too have these grapes been coaxed into balanced flavors of bramble berry, cherry pie and licorice, with a hint of clove and white pepper across the top.

If I were a stronger man, I'd try to mix this wine with a delicious Osso Bucco. Sadly, I was rampaged by an angry Port during a demonstration in Moscow last year. The doctor said I can never wine tame again. However it's still okay for me to be shot out of a cannon into a car full of clowns. Good thing I got my degree, right? Never hurts to have a fall-back.

Gauthier Zinfandel is produced from a small block of 40 year old head trained vines within the historic and sustainably farmed Los Chamizal Vineyard. The fruit presents balanced flavors of bramble berry, cherry pie and licorice, spiced with clove and white pepper. A classic Zinfandel that will complement Italian dishes such as a well-turned Osso Bucco.

In 2002, after 27 years of wine sales and marketing, Greg Gauthier launched his own wine label.  It was a course he had charted many years before...
Early 90s ~ Greg was inspired to make wine by his close friend, winemaker Rodney Strong.
Mid 90s ~ To further his vision of making great wine for his own label, Greg enrolled in winemaking workshops at the University of California at Davis.
Late 90s ~ Greg further refined his skills under the mentoring of accomplished winemakers Rick Sayer (Rodney Strong Vineyards), Dan Karlsen (then at Chalone Vineyards), Ted Seghesio (Seghesio Vineyards), Michael Terrien and Michael Richmond (then at Acacia) and wine consultant Larry Brooks.
The new millennium ~ In 2002, with the acquisition of three tons of Los Carneros Pinot Noir, G. Gauthier Cellars officially began production.
Greg is also Vice President of Wine Production and Sales for Bouchaine Vineyards, the oldest continually operating winery in Napa's Carneros region.  He works closely with Bouchaine winemaker Michael Richmond and consultant Larry Brooks to develop a united vision for their wines.  Greg travels widely, tastes extensively and avidly collects "wine wisdom" for Gauthier Cellars.
