Every Old Neighborhood’s Got One
Gosh, I haven’t thought about her in years. Mrs. Greenfield was her name. My folks would talk about her with the other neighborhood parents during their card game. Lost her husband in the war or something and just kind of became a shut-in, I guess. Poor thing.
But the Cabs, man, jeez. That house was always covered in them. You’ve never seen so many different vintages and wineries, I swear. Some mornings you’d see her go out to get her morning paper and ten or twelve bottles would come rolling out of her front door trying to get away. It was kind of funny to watch her chase after them at first, but after a while it was just sort of sad, you know? So I helped her out a few times. Just to be nice. I’d run up, grab a couple bottles, and hand them back. She’s always yell at me, too. “Child, you are far too young to be concerning yourself with wine! Now, shoo! SHOO!” Heh. Nice way to say thanks, huh?
So, a couple years ago, I got this call from some lawyer who said he had a package for me. A few weeks later I get this box from the guy and it contains six bottles of Copa Del Rey Chilean 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon. Mrs. Greenfield had left them to me in her will. Weird, huh? Jeez, she must’ve been ancient by then, but she still remembered me. And they’re fine Cabernet Sauvignons, too, with a smooth and soft mouthfeel, plus fig, cherry compote, and other dark fruits on the nose. Or so I’ve read, anyway. I haven’t really got the heart to open them. I just kind of keep them around for company.
Okay, I know that sounds a little wacky. I’m allowed a little wacky. It’s not like I’ve got the walls lined with Cabernet Sauvignons like she did. Gosh, I wonder what happened to all those other Cabs, too. I hope they went to good homes. I mean, she might have been a little nutty, but she took really good care of them all. It’d be a shame if they were all destroyed.
