Is this one of those names they give it to make it sound more appetizing?

Is “Chilean Cabernet” the “Patagonian Toothfish” of the wine world?

You can’t be too careful these days; those shifty Marketing execs will do just about anything to get you to buy their product. Take the Patagonian Toothfish, aka “Chilean Sea Bass.” See, a couple of decades ago people decided that Patagonian Toothfish tastes pretty good and they could sell a lot more of it to people if it didn’t have such a terrible name. So they did what the morally bankrupt souls who gravitate to fields like Marketing do: they changed the name and sold the same gross-sounding fish as something better.

But don’t worry, that’s not what’s going on with this Copa del Rey 2009 Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon 6-Pack.

The Patagonian Toothfish might contain dangerous levels of mercury, but that has nothing to do with this Cabernet and its long, even-growing season. You won’t taste anything like mercury, just bold, red cherry flavors and notes of berries. And we can’t definitively tell you what a Patagonian Toothfish smells like, but we’re betting you’ll prefer this wine’s aromas of cocoa and toasted oak.

By the way, the Patagonian Toothfish trick worked so well that now the fish is over-fished and most seafood watch lists note that it’s an unsustainable stock. Not so with Chilean Cabernet. In fact, we double-checked and it’s not even ON the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch List. So you’re probably safe.

Integrated tannins, and a pleasing seam of acidity through the nicely lingering finish round out this stylized wine.
