whining

Cathedral Ridge. A great winery and also probably the name of a town in a Goosebumps book.

I cannot believe how you are both behaving this evening. Roger, look at your wife. Look at how embarrassed she is right now. And you, Gregory, are no better than your brother. Spouse or not, the chances of you seeing me naked any time soon are very, very minute right now, mister.

You are both professional business men in your forties, for Pete’s sake! You can’t put your silly sibling rivalry aside for one nice evening? You can’t just relax and let each other enjoy a glass of Cathedral Ridge wine? Of course not. You’ve gotta one-up one another with your “I taste hints of black pepper in the PN!" "Well, I taste blueberries in the Merlot!” routine. Very mature, fellas. It looked like two children about to scrap over who got to ride the swing first. I hope you’re both very proud of that.

Well, I had thought we might split this last bottle of Cathedral Ridge over meats and cheeses, but I see now that’s impossible. CHILDREN, after all, shouldn’t drink wine. Susan and I will just enjoy it ourselves, far, far, away from your petty bickering, and then we'll buy a couple plane tick - Oh, NOW you’re ready to behave, are you? That figures.

2011 Pinot Noir, Bangsund Vineyard, Columbia Valley 750ml

When you look at Mt. Hood you’ll notice a striking feature, a knife edge ridge running off the summit to the Northwest. This is Cathedral Ridge. Awe inspiring in its ruggedness, it is known by the local climbers as some of the most amazing climbing in the Pacific Northwest. Owner and Cellarmaster, Robb Bell purchased Cathedral Ridge Winery and thought it was a fitting moniker for his winery.

Located just 20 miles to the east of Hood River in The Dalles, OR, sits the Bangsund Vineyard. Warmer in climate, yet still able to produce a delicate Pinot Noir with a true balance of fruit and acidity. This Pinot Noir maintains structure, balance, and the signature flavors that are a mainstay of the Bangsund Vineyard.

Balanced and soft, this Pinot Noir exudes notes of pie cherries, wild strawberries and tea leaves with earthy notes of white pepper and dried herbs. A long finish of raspberry fruit leather and toasted clove.

A selection from our Reserve A warmer weather Pinot Noir vineyard with over 950 feet of elevation change and 10-15 degree temperature swings. The cooler air near Chenoweth Creek at the bottom of the vineyard is great for cooler climate varietals such as Pinot Noir and Riesling. The swing in heat during the day results in a Pinot Noir with an earthier nose and palate.
It is balanced and soft, with notes of pie cherries, wild strawberries, tea leaves and tobacco leaves.

A slight hint of white pepper and dried herbs lingers on the tongue with a finish of raspberry fruit leather and toasted clove.

2011 Merlot, Columbia Valley 750ml

A classic Bordeaux inspired blend with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot. These varietals are made to go together; the bold, sturdy Cabernet and soft and supple Merlot. Beautiful notes of baking spice, sweet meat jerky and ripe Bing cherries with dusted plum and a finish of cedar.

A selection from our Reserve Cellar Library. Sourced from two vineyards outside The Dalles, OR; the Reid and the Kortge vineyards. Beautiful spots with south facing slopes, these two vineyards produce grapes that exude notes of juicy dark fruit, allspice, toasted oak and fragrant violets. On the palate you get flavors of blueberries, raspberries and black strap molasses.

2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley 750ml

We are blessed to be in a growing region where both rainforest and desert can be found within close proximity. Just west of Hood River in the Columbia Gorge we receive 130 inches of rain/year but 20 miles east of us near The Dalles, OR, only 10 inches fall. This allows us to grow grapes representing the four great wine growing regions of the world (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhine and Rhone) all in our backyard. Almost nowhere else in the world is this possible. This proximity means that all our grapes are picked, transported, crushed and in the tanks fermenting within about six hours and, as everyone in the industry knows, grapes hate to travel.

We are also especially lucky to have as our winemaker a fourth generation Sebastiani in Michael. He has spent his whole life with wine and brings his skill and art to Cathedral Ridge Winery.

A full bodied Cabernet Sauvignon from the Columbia Valley, this is a great expression of how well big red wines grow in our area. Smooth and complex with a nose of rosemary, vanilla and blueberry with a palate full of black currant, caramel and a long cedar finish.

Sourced from two vineyards outside The Dalles, OR. Hillside Vineyard and Bangsund Vineyard. These two vineyards combine a lighter bodied Cabernet with a bold, earthy, big bodied Cabernet. The marriage in the bottle makes for a wine that is out of this world good. Complex and elegant, this wine has an incredible balance that is perfect for food pairing. Notes of plums, black cherries and white pepper alongside hints of cedar, eucalyptus and warm pomegranates.
