Yes Tus-can!

California, you know we love you. But Tuscany called.

You've got it all, California. You don't need us to tell you that. But when Tuscany wants a berth on your wine site, you make room. You understand that, right?

Not that the mere fact of Tuscan origin is the main attraction with these Casale Pouzzuolo Tuscan Sangioveses. The intense, complex, austere 2007 Rosso della Porticcia Riserva and the lively, warm, 2008 Rosso della Porticcia would merit the spotlight no matter where they were from.

But when they flash that Tuscan passport, any wine site worth its tannins would roll out the deep-red carpet. California, there's no shame in ceding center stage to these fine Tuscan Sangioveses.

Features

2007 Rosso della Porticcia Riserva – Montecucco DOC 750ml

From a fantastic vintage in Tuscany, this is an intense wine, brilliant ruby red in color. Complex and fragrant aromas which range from red berry fruit to the toasty and spicy sensations of the oak casks. Elegant and austere on the palate, rich and fleshy with tannins and acidity which give balance and support the intrinsic natural softness. The reserve sees more time in oak with some new. The reserve is only made in select vintages. Full-flavored dishes, red meat, wild boar and game in general. Excellent with aged cheese.

2008 Rosso della Porticcia - Montecucco DOC 750ml 2-Pack

Sangiovese for the lover of all things Tuscan, this wine is a lively ruby red color with warm garnet tones. Zippy acidity from the portion of the wine that didn't see oak. Full but with much finesse on the nose and with ample notes of berry fruit and delicate spices. Large-scale, warm, and velvety in texture. In this wine, as well, there is an excellent balance between softness and warmth, tannins and acidity, which gives much drinking pleasure.  A fine match to grilled meat, roasts, stews, and aged cheese.

This 5 hectare property "podere" is close by the Montalcino zone that has produced grapes since Etrusco-Roman times. The casale (farmhouse) dates to the 1400s and belonged to the locally imposing Piccolomini family. The Galluzzi family has been growing grapes here for five generations, though Daniele Galluzzi is the first to bring a high standard of quality to the vineyards.

The Montecucco DOC is in the southern part of Tuscany, in central Italy. This area is nestled between Montalcino, home of the renowned Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, and Scansano, birthplace of the Morellino di Scansano DOCG. Despite having a viticultural heritage dating as far back as the eighth century, this winemaking zone was only awarded its DOC classification in 1998.

According to regulations, vineyards are limited to a small part of the province of Siena and the rest sit in the Upper Maremma. They are situated on the southwest hillsides of the Amiata Mountain, directly opposite the Brunello slopes; the two enjoy the same microclimate.

If you're in Tuscany, you may wish to pay a visit at the country inn in the hillsides between Siena and the sea at Casale Pozzuolo.
