(12) - 2013 Canyon Creek Winery Old Vine Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley, 750ml
2013 Canyon Creek Winery Old Vine Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley
The wine opens with classic ripe berry and a hint of black pepper spice. Flavors of ripe marionberry and red plum follow highlighted by a touch of toasted oak as well as warm baking spices. The fine balance between ripe fruit, mellow tannins and just-right acidity are framed nicely in this Old Vine Zinfandel.
Background
Dry Creek Valley is home to some of the oldest Zinfandel vineyards in California and the grape was first planted in the 1880s. Canyon Creek Winery is situated in the heart of Zinfandel country. One half of all the Zinfandel planted in Sonoma County is at home in this appellation with over 2500 acres situated in a valley that is 16 miles long by 2 miles wide, the smallest of the four major appellations in the county.
The winery and vineyard is located in the midst of many well-known Zinfandel producers including A. Rafanelli, Dry Creek Vineyard, Mauritson, Ridge-Lytton Springs, Peterson, Quivira, Nalle, Sbragia and Seghesio. The ancient head-pruned vines are mostly found on the hillsides where these deep-rooted vineyards grow. The combination of great soils and the right microclimates make for the best of all possible conditions to grow outstanding Zinfandel.
The 2013 season had ideal growing conditions with warm days and cool nights that allowed Zinfandel grapes to reach full ripeness with balanced acids. Harvested the third week of September the wine displays the aroma and fruit profile of classic Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel and the result is a rich, complex and well-balanced wine.
