Sense of Site

It’s the Bennett Valley in a bottle, with all the trees and rocks and stuff strained out.

When wine tastes like it could come from anywhere, it might as well come from nowhere. Broc Cellars don’t play that. Their 2008 Grenache positively sings of the Bennett Valley AVA, with aromas of kirsch, clove, black currant, and pepper balancing out the red fruit character for a flavor that could only come from where it comes from.

But why this cooler, rockier corner of Sonoma instead of the bigger-name AVAs thereabouts? Y’see, Broc Cellars believes that, as with people, a little hardship brings out the best in grapevines. And, as with Tolstoy’s unhappy families, every struggling grapevine struggles in its own way. The result is a wine that reflects its birthplace as faithfully as a mirror.

By the time Chris Brockway and crew finish ministering to this Grenache in their urban winery in Berkeley, it’s practically got a BENNETT VALLEY 4 LIFE tattoo on its bicep. Exotic, elegant, focused, and restrained, the 2008 Broc Cellars Grenache doesn’t just put Bennett Valley on the map – it pretty much IS a map.

Aged in 100% French Oak, none of which is new, to allow this region's Grenache to express its true character. This exotic aromatics and balanced fruit flavor are what make the Sonoma Valley Appellation region so unique. Broc Cellars was nothing more than an idea not that long ago, about making wines that were “site specific”. Where the wines true character came from using only sustainably, organically, or biodynamically grown grapes from areas that most would consider marginal climates. Believing that vineyards develop ‘true’ character and complexity when they have to struggle to survive.

This can come from many different aspects: poor nutrient and water holding capacity, steep slopes, cool temperatures, or from old vines that are dry farmed. In the cellar we try to continue this practice using minimal intervention, in an effort to let the grapes speak for themselves.

We are a ‘low wattage’ winery in the sense that we have very little modern equipment. Grapes are pitchforked whole-cluster into the fermenters, fermentation is allowed to happen spontaneously, all wines are basket pressed, with little/no sulphur used in our wines until bottling. True asphalt winemaking, in an urban winery.
