There Is No Pleasure Without Spain
Funny how many Europeans took naturally to the parts of North America that most resembled their homes. The British settled the green and pleasant land of New England. Scandinavians hunkered down in the frozen tundra of Minnesota and the fjords of the Pacific Northwest. And the Spanish flourished in the rugged, sunbaked Southwest - especially California.
As go people, so go grapes. Bodegas M gives Spanish varietals a familiar home away from home in California's Central Coast. Does their 2011 Albariño ever reminisce about the sweeping hillsides and towering oaks of its Spanish homeland, so similar to Edna Valley? Small of batch and rich in fruit, the Albariño hides its secrets behind citrus, pineapple, green apple, and narcissus notes and a creamy finish. Still, we imagine that on a warm evening, when a stray guitar note or accordion trill sighs across the Edna Valley, something stirs in the hearts of these grapes. (Grapes do have hearts, right? We flunked biology.)
Features
The Albariño is a shy grape with very low yields both in the vineyard and the winery. This lack of productivity was the reason that it was never grown much outside of Spain (and a little in northern Portugal). Winemaker Alan Kinne realized that Edna Valley was a perfect home for Albariño and insisted that it be planted there nearly a decade ago. The result is the American rebirth for the variety.
The 2011 Albariño Querida is green-gold in color, with aromas of citrus and pineapple. The attack is sharp, the mid-palate rich, with green apple, citrus, and narcissus wrapped in a creamy finish. This wine is unique in that it spends eight months in one year old and two year old French oak. This endows the wine with a rich underpinning to support the racy fruit attack, and gives the Albariño Querida a long, creamy finish. This wine is distinctive in its complexity and integration. Bodegas M Albariño 2011 Querida recalls the classic wines of Rías Baixas only, perhaps, better.
