Zin Search Of...
The Croatians who first grew it called it "Crljenak Kaštelanski". 19th-century records mention a "Black Zinfardel" from Hungary, also called tzinifándli and czirifandli; a German white grape called Zierfandler; and a table grape called Zinfindal. We have no idea how these names came to be the Zinfandel we know today.
But we know exactly how the Zinfandel in these three bottles came to be: through the distinctive terroir of the Sonoma County vineyards, the unique climate of the Russian River Valley, and the careful, small-batch winemaking of Bertapelle Cellars. Whatever "Zinfandel" meant 200 years ago, today it means berry flavors, spice notes, round tannins, and a nice long finish. One taste and you'll forget all about looking it up in your Funk & Wagnalls.

On the nose, this Zinfandel has raspberry, cherry, white pepper, tangerine zest, and herbal and earth notes. The mid-palate can detect raspberry with dried cherry, and finishes to Bing cherry, and toasty oak, and soft acids and tannins, with perfect balance that lets this fruit shine! These AVAs are well known for the production of high-quality Zinfandels, Pinot Noirs, and Petite Sirahs. The Bertapelle Cellars' partners - Dick Bertapelle, Mike Griffin, and Michael Talty - clearly recognize that their Healdsburg location provides the opportunity to access the finest grapes for their Sonoma wines.
Sonoma County is home to some of the finest wines in the world. Our terroir, topography, and climate provide exceptional growing conditions that produce the intense flavors and deep colors of world class wines. Our vineyards represent the Russian River appellation where the fruit characteristics are developed from the rocky, but rich soils, the varied hills and benches formed by the river, and the warm days and cool nights that are influenced by the summer fog coming up the Russian River Valley from the Pacific Ocean.
We create handcrafted Bertapelle Cellars wines from our own estate vineyard and hand selected vineyards that meet our high standards of farming excellence. Fruit selection is paramount to our high quality wines.
Our limited production quantity allows our owners and winemaker to follow the wine making process carefully, with great attention to detail, in an artisan style.
We welcome you to explore the exciting grape to glass experience that is Bertapelle Cellars.
