Wine's Best Friend

Wines worthy of being named after the winemaker's dog. Can there be any higher praise?

Winemakers name their wines after all kinds of things. Family members, favorite songs, a notable rock on their property. But very few wines merit the ultimate honor: being named after the winemaker's best friend.

In 1999, Bell Wine's Big Guy series took its name from Anthony Bell's beloved dog, whose shaggy mug stares cheerfully out from the label. Like a couple of good old family mutts, this Red and this White both blend noble bloodlines into something honest, dependable, keenly intelligent, and eager to please.

The Bells' dog is no longer with them. Big Guy doesn't shuffle into the winery office and flop down into a patch of sunshine anymore. But giving his name to these Bell Big Guy wines honors both the wines and the good friend who inspired them. And that's not just a shaggy-dog story.

Features

2011 Big Guy White Wine, California 750ml 2-Pack

The 2011 Big Guy White blends two Rhone varietals, Rousanne and Viognier, with Chardonnay to create an elegant wine with floral aromas and flavors of melon, pear and apricot. Adding Chardonnay to the blend makes the wine rich and complex with good acidity. The Big Guy White is a great complement to sushi, Thai cuisine or any seafood. This is a wonderfully radiant and delightful wine, meant to be enjoyed with your friends.

This Big Guy White Wine is a blend from select lots drawn from California appellations. Bell Wine Cellars blends this distinctive wine to show off the fragrances of fresh fruit complemented by balanced acidity and subtle sweetness. This complexity makes it the perfect wine for the patio and the dining room table.

The 2011 growing season was the most challenging in Winemaker Anthony Bell’s 35 vintages in Napa Valley, characterized by uncharacteristically cool temperatures, uncertainty, ill-timed rain, and crop loss. A wet winter and spring continued with unusual rainfall into mid-June that delayed bloom and disrupted fruit set in parts of the region. Some vineyards saw more than 30% loss of crop. There were few days over 90 degrees during summer, and autumn started with some rare early rain storms. Overall the cooler-than- average growing season saw more than a third above normal in rainfall and ended in the latest harvest in anyone's memory. This was truly the year of the professional. Vineyard managers, cellar masters and winemakers used every tool available to them to achieve glory. At Bell, careful selection of vineyards, painstaking work during harvest and in the cellar, and of course Anthony’s decades of experience have paid off resulting in truly elegant wines.

2011 Big Guy Red Wine, California 750ml 2-Pack

The 2011 Big Guy Red is a blend of five varietals. The Malbec gives the wine a hint of violets and mocha, while Syrah from the Canterbury Vineyard in the Sierra foothills lends a ripe, luscious spice nose to the wine. The result is a wine with lively fruit aromas, rich, ripe red berry, and cocoa flavors wrapped in a blanket of toasted oak and soft, supple tannins in a persistent finish. This is a wine for every day drinking, whether on the patio with grilled chicken or in the dining room with roasted duck.

Blended to create an easy drinking red wine with lots of ripe red fruit aromas and flavors, this wine is enjoyable while young, the tannin structures will allow the wine to develop gracefully for several years.

Bell Wine Cellars

Owners:
Anthony Bell, Ron Berberian, & Alex Spanos
Founded:
1998
Location:
Yountville, CA, Napa Valley

Situated off the beaten path, just south of Yountville, is an exquisite pale stone winery, shrouded by oak, bordered to the south by Hopper Slough, surrounded by vineyard and cloaked in quiet. After looking for twenty years, winemaker Anthony Bell found the perfect place to produce the wines he had long dreamed of - limited production, hand crafted wines that showcase the concept of "terroir". In 1998, Bell Wine Cellars opened its doors to the public to share the beauty of the place, and the wine.

In June 2002 - Ron Berberian, former California wine wholesaler, and Alex Spanos, owner of the San Diego Chargers, formed Spanos Berberian Winery, LLC. The venture acquired interest in the brand name and assets of Bell Wine Cellars, and a new partnership was formed with Anthony.

Nestled between the stacks of aromatic barrels and towering stainless steel tanks, guests can taste the signature Bell Cabernet, at the intimate, elegant tasting room. We also serve Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah, encompassing a wide range of flavors, from vineyards both near and far afield.

Top Comments are discussion forum posts we have deemed worthy of your time. Listen, we get a lot of comments, and most of the time, it's pretty forgettable stuff; but sometimes you rise to the top like butterfat in milk. We don't recommend you base your self-worth on how often we feature your comments, but we don't expressly forbid it either.
