The soul of our Estate Vineyard wines comes from ancient vines planted between 1892 and 1924. Seventeen years ago we planted a three acre block of the varieties that make the best wine from the old vineyard, using cuttings from the ancient vines when feasible. We used drought tolerant rootstock, trained the new vines with widely spaced spurs, and, as the vines matured, weaned them off irrigation. All of these measures, along with rigorous fruit thinning to limit yields, were taken in order to replicate the quality of fruit from the ancient vines as closely as possible. Since this new vineyard block matured we have been blending old and young vine grapes to make our Estate Zinfandel, Syrah and Grenache. Old vine grapes have made up 20-40% of the blend of each of these wines most years. We also follow the old tradition of blending small amounts of other varieties into each of these wines.
2013 Estate Zinfandel
Here we use Durif (aka “Petite Sirah”) and Carignan, California’s traditional Zinfandel partners. Our Estate Zinfandel always develops slowly, even in a soft vintage such as 2013. Blackberry, briar, clove and black pepper aromas, concentrated flavors and a solid backbone. This wine is a great foil for rich meat and cheese dishes now, but will require more aging to be fully enjoyable on its own or with lighter fare.
2013 Estate Syrah
This wine is cofermented with 3-5% Viognier, in the tradition of Côte Rôtie. The ample tannin in the Viognier helps stabilize color, and the floral and stonefruit aromatics add complexity and brightness to Syrah’s dark nature. The near ideal weather conditions of the 2013 vintage produced wines of excellent freshness and intensity, with plenty of ripe, relatively soft tannin. Our 2013 Syrahs are precocious, softer than many previous vintages at this stage of life. Blueberry and hickory smoked bacon aromas with hints of apricot and honeysuckle, and the juicy texture that is a hallmark of the vintage.
2013 Estate Grenache
We include dollops of old vine Mourvedre and Tempranillo in this wine to help with color stability and aging potential, as Grenache can be prone to early oxidation and browning. While completely enjoyable now, low pH, great fruit concentration and sufficient tannin give this wine a ten year plus aging potential. Intense cherry and raspberry aromas with a touch of cinnamon-like spice lead into a rich full bodied wine with a lingering finish.
2013 Estate Field Blend 24
This is a vintage 2013 wine, although not listed as such on the label due to a printing error that wasn’t caught in time. This was made 100% from vines planted in 1924 or earlier that we have used for port production in prior years. It is a true field blend – a vineyard planted with multiple varieties in order to provide both crop insurance and “balanced wine insurance”. The blend is more than 50% Carignan, along with Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache, Criolla, Durif, Zinfandel, Alicante Bouschet, Grand Noir, Petite Bouschet and? This wine is rich and soft right out of the gate – no further aging required for maximum enjoyment.
