2009 Syrah, Sonoma Valley Estate 750ml 4-Pack
Gold Medal, Sonoma County Harvest Fair 2014
Wellington Vineyards is proud to release our sixth vintage of Estate Syrah. Beautiful dark color and dense aromas of cocoa, bacon and black fruits give way to a soft and rich mouthfeel. Recommended food pairings are beef bourguignon, mushroom risotto, and pheasant basted with roasted shallots and caramelized onion sauce.
We are blessed to have a good number of Syrah vines in all our old vineyard blocks, planted between 1892 and 1924. When we replanted three acres in 2001, we included one acre of Syrah clone 174, a small berried, low yielding selection prized for high quality in the Rhône. 2009 is the sixth year since 1995 that we have bottled Estate Syrah.
This wine is still very youthful as it approaches its sixth birthday. It has powerful fruit aromas reminiscent of boysenberry, blueberry, black cherry and Mission figs. It's very complex, with mocha, licorice, leather, cardamom, allspice and gamy, smoky notes. There's bright fruit on the palate, a full, supple mid-palate and a tart fruit finish with enough tannic grip to ensure at least another 3-5 years of development.

Wellington Vineyards is owned Peter Wellington. Peter's father John purchased the winery site in 1986. At the time, it consisted of 20 acres of old vines and a few decrepit old fruit and nut trees. Replanting of part of the old vineyard and orchard started in 1988. The winery was completed in time for the 1989 crush. We grow approximately half the grapes we use and purchase the remainder, primarily from small, unique vineyards.
The estate vineyards consist of 21 acres, 8 of which are 85 to 117 years old. There are 24 different varieties in the old vineyard, with the most common being Zinfandel, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, Grenache and Syrah. In addition, there are 10 acres of eleven to sixteen year old vines that consist of Merlot, Chardonnay, Marsanne, and Syrah. We grow more Merlot than anything else. Three more acres were replanted in 2001, predominantly to Syrah, Zinfandel and Grenache.
