Pour Your Consideration

You're about to win Best in Show at the annual Westminster Drinking Club 12-Pack Potluck.

Who says a great 12-pack has to consist of beer? When you plop this mixed case of Wellington summer whites on the picnic table of honor, not even the hippest, hoppiest, craftiest brew will be able to stand up to it.

You've got the bright, nervy 2010 Chardonnay, with fruity and floral flavors harmonizing into a complex, vibrant white a million miles away from the same old Chard. You've got the thick and rich 2010 Roussanne, dryer than British wit. You've got the smooth, crisp 2010 Sauvignon Blanc, enlivened with a peachy splash of Viognier. And last but hardly least, presenting The Duchess, a white blend draped in robes of citrus and acidity.

Best of all, you've got three bottles of each one of these typically brilliant Wellington whites. This 12-pack might not be as easy to carry as a 12-pack of beer, but when it comes to which is easier to drink, well, there's no competition.

2010 Chardonnay, Sonoma Valley 750ml 3-Pack
The 2010 Chardonnay was produced from a blend of grapes from the Collins vineyard in Carneros, Hobert Nelson’s steep, east facing vineyard on Sonoma Mountain, and their Estate vineyard. As with the wonderful 2009 vintage, Wellington Vineyards cold fermented about 25% of the total blend in stainless steel and used a limited amount of new oak for the barrel fermented portion.

This medium bodied Chardonnay features complex aromas and flavors of pear, citrus, green apple, elder flower, nutmeg and a hint of toasty oak, with sufficient acid to give a clean, crisp finish. In describing this wine, the term nervosity comes to mind. It is bright and lively and will make a much superior dinner companion than so many of the sweet, oaky, disjointed Chardonnays being produced these days.
2010 Roussanne, Sonoma County 750ml 3-Pack
Aromas of green apple and Asian pear, honeysuckle, wet wool, and decadent tropical fruit.  The palate is rich and viscous, with a clean, dry finish devoid of sweetness or heat.
2011 Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma Valley 750ml 3-Pack
Wellington Vineyards doesn’t like making Sauvignon Blanc in a Chardonnay “wannabe” style. They try to be true to the grapes’ natural character rather than transform it into another “international style” cookie-cutter wine.

The Sauvignon Blanc came from Indian Springs Ranch and Fallenleaf Vineyard, both on the western slopes of Sonoma Valley. Wellington again included small amounts of old vine Semillon and Muscadelle de Bordelais, Sauvignon Blanc’s traditional partners in Bordeaux. They also included a small amount of Viognier. They tank fermented a portion to maximize freshness and barrel fermented a portion for added richness and texture. The Semillon and Muscadelle add notes of fig and passionfruit, while the Viognier accents the peach and floral aspects of Sauvignon blanc. The primary aromas are citrus Grapefruit, mandarin, lime), passionfruit and mineral (wet stone), with notes of melon, pineapple, gooseberry and guava. The texture is silky smooth without heaviness and a crisp, fresh finish that features a slight hint of chalk. To maintain freshness, Wellington bottled their Sauvignon Blanc in a screw cap finish bottle.
2012 The Duchess, Sonoma Valley White Wine 750ml 3-Pack
Citrus (orange, tangerine, lemon, grapefruit) aromas dominate, with notes of melon, honeysuckle, peach, jasmine and fig.  On the palate there is richness and viscosity nicely balanced by crisp acidity.  The finish is quite dry, with good length - a much more serious wine than the price point would indicate.

Winery Details

Wellington Vineyards

Peter Wellington
Glen Ellen, CA

Wellington Vineyards is owned Peter Wellington. Peter's father John purchased the winery site in 1986. At the time, it consisted of 20 acres of old vines and a few decrepit old fruit and nut trees. Replanting of part of the old vineyard and orchard started in 1988. The winery was completed in time for the 1989 crush. We grow approximately half the grapes we use and purchase the remainder, primarily from small, unique vineyards.
The estate vineyards consist of 21 acres, 8 of which are 85 to 117 years old. There are 24 different varieties in the old vineyard, with the most common being Zinfandel, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, Grenache and Syrah. In addition, there are 10 acres of eleven to sixteen year old vines that consist of Merlot, Chardonnay, Marsanne, and Syrah. We grow more Merlot than anything else. Three more acres were replanted in 2001, predominantly to Syrah, Zinfandel and Grenache.
