Taking Over
It's Friday the 13th, and so we thought it would be a good time to take a step back and consider one of the most frightening creatures of them all: vampires.
And what's so frightening about them? No, it's no longer all the whole sucking blood, turning into a bat, living for a thousand years stuff. Now what's so scary about vampires is our obsession with them.
It all started with some books. And that's fine, right? After all, vampires were basically born in books. From there, they started showing up in more movies. Still, that's not a problem; everyone loves a good scare. The real problem is that it didn't stop. They just kept making more books and more movies and then, of course, television had to get pulled into the fray. In the end, even our very history couldn't be safeguarded against the vampire infection.
And now that they've sucked the entertainment industry dry, they're coming after wine.
But don't worry, this mixed case from Vampire Vineyards isn't the Trueblood of wines; it doesn't start off okay, then get gross, until finally it just goes flat. No, with 5 different varieties - including the gracefully fruity 2010 Merlot, the light, smooth 2010 Pinot Noir, among others - these wines represent the first time in a long time that the word "Vampire" has been affixed to something tasteful.
Features
2010 Merlot 750ml 3-Pack
Picked at peak ripeness, this Merlot is fermented on the skins for two weeks, with three-times-daily pump-overs, the traditional method of extraction that brings rich color and supple tannins to the new wine. Aged with a combination of both French and American oak, this Merlot develops graceful fruit flavors in the cellar, complemented by subtle shadings of vanilla and toast from the oak. Approachable now, Vampire Merlot is perfectly balanced for additional bottle aging.
Pairs well with a wide range of foods, especially chicken, beef, lamb, game, and pasta with tomato-based sauces.
2010 Pinot Noir 750ml 2-Pack
Powerful forest fruit and wild strawberry aromas persist on the nose, balanced by hints of fine French oak. The vibrant ruby red colors hint at a young wine, but the taste reveals a remarkable maturity. Elegant soft fruit flavors are already finely integrated into the structure of the wine, as is the oak, adding a subtle but powerful complexity to the flavor. This is a light smooth wine, easy to drink at any time of the year and exhibiting typical character of a young Pinot Noir.
Vampire Pinot Noir is well suited to Venison and game dishes, and is equally well adapted to pasta dishes featuring basil and tomato sauces. It can be enjoyed as an aperitif or as an after dinner wine with Belgian milk chocolate and blue cheeses.
2010 Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml 3-Pack
Vampire Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from several smallberry clones of traditional Bordeaux varietals, grown in the North Coast. An extended growing season, with sunny, moderate daytime temperatures, along with cool summer nights, allows ideal fruit development at this site.
Well drained soils, rich in maritime fossils, add uniquely aromatic components to this fruit-forward wine. Classic, small-lot fermentations, followed by aging with both European and American oak, gives full expression to the rich varietal flavors in this wine. Judiciously blended with small amounts of Merlot for softness, and Syrah for added structure, our Cabernet displays ripe flavor character and a lovely aroma that will continue to develop with additional time in bottle. Ideal for grilled steaks and chops, or with rich red pasta dishes, our Cabernet Sauvignon is well suited for the table, and is a wonderful complement to any fine meal.
2010 Pinot Grigio 750ml 2-Pack
Fresh lime fruit notes dominate the nose, the pleasant light green color leading into an easy drinking lively wine full of youthful, refreshing acidity typical of this world famous variety best known for its performance in Italy.
This wine is made in the modern seductive style and is ideal for summer events especially with an Italian theme. It is well suited to a wide range of food styles, especially light pasta dishes with white sauces and shellfish, fresh seafood recipes, as well as aromatic Pacific Rim dishes such as Thai style chicken with coriander and lime.
2010 Chardonnay 750ml 2-Pack
Perhaps no other region in California is as well adapted to this traditional Burgundy varietal as the Central Coast Here, cool coastal breezes allow fresh acidity to remain intact in the fruit, and the long, extended growing season provides full flavor development in the grapes. Hand-picked at peak ripeness, this Chardonnay was barrel fermented in French oak, aged on the yeast lees for one year, then carefully bottled with minimal handling to ensure that subtle flavors remain intact. Crisp and refreshing, our Chardonnay is an ideal accompaniment to grilled seafood or poultry, and also complements mildly flavored cheeses. The wine’s rich texture, the result of regular stirring of the lees, further provides a big mouthfeel to this classically structured white wine.

Rumor has it that the Vampire Vineyards are actually owned by a circle of vampires and the company’s founder, Michael Machat, an entertainment attorney from New York, is actually just a front. Whether he and his convertible were commandeered by a Vampire is still a subject for debate. The truth may never be known, however Michael first began talking about branding wine with the vampire mark back in 1985 after picking up a mysterious hitch-hiker on a late night drive through the pitch black Nevada desert.
