Reddy for the weekend?!

Don't forget to check out our latest review in Bassoon Fancy magazine!

Now, we’ve got nothing against the established, respected wine critics and magazines. They’ve earned their reputations with insightful, knowledgeable wine criticism. (At least, that’s what the guy at the liquor store tells us.) But sometimes a perspective from outside the wine establishment can really help us reach a deeper understanding of what a wine is all about. Here’s what three nontraditional wine authorities have to say about the wines we're offering today.

Phelps County Truck & Boat Trader, Sept. 23, 2012:
“FOR SALE: 2010 Toccato Dolcetto, low miles, good cond., runs good. Santa Barbara AVA. Light body, dried cherries, dark choc, sage. Ask about hand-punching. $26 OBO.”

GrapeAura: The Journal of New Age Wine Studies, Feb. 2014:
“A beacon of spirit energy radiating throughout the universe and the innerverse, Lucas & Lewellen 2010 Toccata Barbera embodies mind/body harmony in its acidic balance. Smooth tannins and rich, wild-cherry satyrs cavort in a deep red forest, twirling to the mad symphony of existence. More renewing than a crystal yoga colonic.”

Alcohol is Murder!: The Official Newsletter of the Ladies’ Temperance Anti-Pleasure League, Spring 1840:
“Perhaps most insidious is the poison known as Lucas & Lewellen 2009 Toccata Freisa. Where common ordinary rotgut warns away the timid with noxiously toxic odors and flavors, this liquid seductress hides its peril behind the enticing aroma of raspberries and violets. Stout indeed must be the soul who hopes to resist its long, fruity finish and easy-drinking charms.”

So there you have it. If you’ve learned as much as we have from this little exercise, you still have absolutely no clue what this Lucas & Lewellen Mixed Red Case is like. Guess you’ll just have to taste it for yourself.

Features

From the Lucas & Lewellen vineyards in Santa Barbara County, Louis Lucas selects choice lots for a limited production of premium wines.  Attention to detail in the vineyards yields superior quality grapes from which Megan McGrath Gates crafts award winning wines. The vineyards of Lucas & Lewellen are located in the three principal wine grape growing regions of Santa Barbara County: the Santa Maria Valley, the Los Alamos Valley, and the Santa Ynez Valley. These valleys all run west from the coastal mountains to the Pacific Ocean, allowing warm days and cool nights to produce a long, gentle growing season.

2009 Toccata Sangiovese, Santa Barbara County 750ml 2-Pack

Sangiovese is steadily gaining a foothold in far flung districts of California where the cooler climate locations like our Los Alamos vineyard are proving to be the most promising. Distinguished by aromas of pomegranate, and fruits like plum and cherry, this wine will enhance all Italian and Mediterranean cuisine.

2010 Toccata Barbera, Santa Barbara County 750ml 2-Pack

Barbera is the most widely planted variety in Italy and has traditionally been the most popular red Italian varietal here in California.  Barbera has excellent color and maintains its balanced acidity in both warmer and cooler climates.  It develops into a silky, full bodied wine with smooth tannins and bold acidity. Our Barbera, from cool Los Alamos, ripens late and produces a dark, wild cherry-tinged wine with lovely rich fruit character.

2010 Toccata Pinot Noir, Santa Barbara County 750ml 2-Pack

We hand select the best Pinot Noir, Clone 115 and 667, from our family-owned Santa Barbara county vineyards to create this ruby red wine. Meticulous attention to tradition is evident in its refined palate, showing flavors of red currant, huckleberry, and sage, with velvety tannins and a classic Pinot Noir earthiness ending in a lingering finish.

2010 Toccata Dolcetto, Santa Barbara County 750ml 2-Pack

Dolcetto, a lighter-bodied variety from Northern Italy that we grow in our family-owned vineyards in Santa Barbara County. This supple, food-friendly wine with mild tannins reveals flavors of dried cherries, dark chocolate, and sage. Enjoy it with your favorite Italian cuisine.

2009 Toccata Freisa, Santa Barbara County 750ml 2-Pack

Our small planting of 928 vines in Los Alamos is one of the very few instances of Freisa in California. This wine has an aroma of raspberries and violets with hints of vanilla from oak aging. Well structured tannins and a long, fruity finish make for a versatile, easy drinking Italian style wine.

2009 Nebbiolo Barbera, Santa Barbara County 750ml 2-Pack

Nebbiolo: A variety beloved for its pure fruit character, firm tannins, and age worthiness; produces red wine suitable for great empires and culinary adventures. Barbera: Silky, full bodied wine with smooth tannins and bold acidity. This wine blends the majestic quality and structure of Nebbiolo with the rich fruitiness of Barbera, producing a wine of elegance and mouth-filling flavor. The blend exhibits dried cherry flavors of the Nebbiolo, the “noble” grape of Italy, and plum with cranberry flavors of the Barbera. The result is this pleasing, rare concept wine, of which limited barrels were produced.
