That's Good Advice

It might seem counterintuitive, but the man with the collection of tiny bottles knows what's up.

That's the trouble with you young people today. Always looking for adventure. Never satisfied with the simple pleasures in life, like a smorgasbord of wine samples from three different continents. Now that's living!

Why would I want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane with nothing but a table cloth in a knapsack to break my fall? Tell me, why would I tie a giant rubber band to my ankle and pray that it doesn't snap as I'm plunging to my death? Do you even know how many trips to the chiropractor I'd need after something like that? I'll just keep my feet planted firmly on the ground right here next to these tiny bottles of wine, thank you very much.

Take it from an old man who knows. Don't go globe-trotting all over creation in some hopeless romantic journey of self-discovery. Save your money and just enjoy a few 50ml bottles of liquid courage instead. But be sure to enjoy them responsibly. You don't want to wake up one morning in the clink with a hangover. And even if you do, big deal. At least it won't be a Thai prison. But that's another story for another day.

Features

A Taste Adventure Red & White Essentials

Part of the fun of wine tasting is the thrill of discovery. Find your new favorite with this thrilling collection of wines from three continents. This sampler offers six 50ml bottles featuring the following wines.

2010 Dry Creek Vineyard Dry Creek Valley Sauvignon Blanc 50ml

This incredible Sauvignon Blanc displays the excellent cool climate characters of the vintage. At first swirl, vibrant lemon grass, citrus peel, and pineapple aromas leap from the glass. Several more minutes of airing display wonderful nuances of orange zest and delicate floral characters. On the palate, the wine is zesty and full of energy repeating the aromatic themes of lemon grass and lemon verbena along with underlying tropical fruit richness. The finish is full flavored and balanced ending with juicy, mouthwatering acidity. Delicious with: Hog Island oysters, shellfish, gruyere and fig cheese platter.

2011 Chamisal "Stainless" Central Coast Chardonnay 50ml

This complex wine exhibits classic varietal characteristics with aromas of ripe pineapple, fresh Gala apples, pear and candied lemon. The palate has a weight that belies its unoaked status with a rich entry of fresh citrus fruit that leads into secondary aromas of fig and mineral. Finishing clean and crisp with lingering acidity, the wine is fresh and vivacious with a dense mid-palate. This vintage proves that with the right grapes and winemaking, Chardonnay does not need oak or malolactic fermentation to shine. Delicious with: Fresh oysters, spicy ceviche, Asian cuisine.

2010 The Doctors' Marlborough Riesling 50ml

Now assuming cult status in the New Zealand wine scene, the Doctors’ Riesling continues to amaze wine critics and novices alike. Grown on the stony Condor’s Bend Vineyard at Renwick, the fruit ripens slowly in Marlborough’s cool, dry climate, gaining complex flavors while retaining all-important acidity.
Doctors’ Riesling shows signature lime sherbet, granny smith apple and mandarin flavors on the appealing nose. The palate melds citrus with apricot and an intriguing Asian spice character. Naturally low alcohol assures each mouthful is a refreshingly delicious experience, with lovely fruit sweetness balanced by fine acidity.  Delicious with: Pork, poultry, seafood and Asian cuisine.

2010 Old Coach Road Nelson Pinot Noir

The Old Coach Road Pinot Noir is brimming with ripe berry fruit characters and fine earthy notes. Velvety tannins together with thyme notes complement well integrated oak on the palate.

2009 Twisted Oak "*%#&@!" Red Blend

This Côtes du Rhône-style blend of Mourvèdre, Syrah, and Grenache has bright fruit flavors of blueberry and cherry as well as meaty and peppery character and hints of Provençal herbs and spices. When mixing these wines Twisted Oak was looking to find a great food-friendly, easy-drinking blend that best represented grapes grown in their terrific climate. Delicious with: Duck, barbecued baby back ribs, Szechuan foods, Mom's meatloaf.

2008 Urraca Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon

This Cab is a rich wine with a nose of spice and toasted oak which yield to flavors of baked plum, coffee and macerated currant. Full-bodied, rich, and incipiently complex, this sweetly-fruited, layered Cabernet is well-balanced with a lengthy finish. Delicious with:Hard cheeses, salty foods, pasta and grilled red meats. A perfect match for Argentinean "Asado" (BBQ)

A Taste Adventure Food Friendly Wines

Wine and food are inextricably linked, each bringing out the best in the other. Taste six carefully selected wines that pair perfectly with food and see how wine can turn any meal into an occasion. This sampler offers six 50ml bottles featuring the following wines.

2011 Lake Chalice Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

Pale straw in color with green hues, this Sauvignon Blanc shows predominantly blackcurrant and grapefruit aromas. A crisp, medium-bodied, dry wine with a refreshing and elegant palate, it has mouth-watering acidity balanced by a mineral note on the lingering finish. From a total of 13 different vineyard/tank components, a blend of the seven best was selected to make up the 2011 Lake Chalice Black Label Sauvignon Blanc. The Talon Vineyard in Grovetown accounts for 50% of the wine, with the balance coming from three other vineyards in the Grovetown and Rapaura districts of Marlborough’s Wairau Plain. Delicious with:Seafood, white meats, pan smoked eel crostini with nam phrik num dressing (mango, chili, coriander, ginger, lime).

2008 Urraca Mendoza Chardonnay

This high-class Chardonnay is light-bodied, with tasty orchard fruit (apples and quince) notes and a bright finish. Some have described it as a "Meursault" styled Chardonnay that is ultimately elegant, pleasant, refreshing and not buttery. "A Champagne without the bubbles." Delicious with:Soft cheeses, fish, poultry.

2009 Lucas & Lewellen Santa Barbara County Chenin Blanc

The Los Alamos Vineyard is a cool climate vineyard in the Santa Barbara County AVA. Stretching for over a mile of Highway 101 frontage just south of the town of Los Alamos, these vineyards are home to over 20 varieties of grapes. With some of the vines planted from cuttings brought from Europe over 30 years ago, these vineyards have long been a favorite source for many of California's best wineries.
Made in a traditional style, this wine has a slight touch of residual sugar to accentuate the rare tropical fruit flavors of lychee, mangosteen and pineapple. The wine is exotic when young and will develop familiar aromas of honey, caramel and pear. Upon entry, the wine is round and creamy but it has a fine edge on the mid-palate and finish.  Delicious with:Baked ham, spinach dip, spicy food.

2010 Il Cuore "The Heart" Mendocino County Barbera

The Il Cuore Barbera is a robust red wine styled after the fabled Barbera d’Alba wines of northern Italy’s Piedmont region. The grapes were harvested from three vineyards in northern Mendocino County located on well-drained, gravelly soil terraces above valley floors. Grape production is low from old vine plantings, resulting in concentrated flavors in the mature grapes. A blend of 78% Barbera, 10% Zinfandel, 7% Merlot and 5% Syrah, the bright, ripe raspberry aromas and rich cane fruit flavors in this wine offer attractive complexity. Barrel aging was completed in seasoned sixty-gallon oak cooperage to sculpt tannins and mature the wine. The wine has dark garnet color and is smooth with mouth-filling soft ripe fruit flavors. Delicious with:Lamb dishes, broiled salmon, smoked or slow grilled meat including ribs, creamy risotto, or aged cheeses.

2009 Stickybeak California Syrah

The '09 Syrah has an edgy, dynamic tasting profile with a vibrant nose of red berry compote, black pepper and spice aromas readily apparent. The palate follows suit adding a mélange of cedar, red currants and orange rind to the mix. This is a medium-bodied Syrah with a sensual mouthfeel. There's also a silkiness and freshness that invigorates the mouth through its persistent finish. Delicious with:Barbecue, Mexican cuisine, chocolate.

2009 Penley Estate "Condor" Coonawarra Red Blend

Continuing a family tradition that spans five generations, Kym Tolley established Penley in 1988 on Coonawarra’s famed terra rossa soils, with the aim of producing terroir-driven wines of true regional character.  The wine is fruit forward and complex, created by 100% estate-grown Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon with the finesse of oak and full of berry flavor. The style expresses the traditional (Shiraz) and the contemporary (Cabernet Sauvignon) grapes of Coonawarra.  Aromas of sweet berry and black cherry notes with a touch of mocha spice to the bouquet and complex vanillin oak with some smoky overtones. The palate has a young but fine tannin structure, good mid palate richness and a sweet cedar menthol finish that will evolve with age.  Delicious with: Grilled meat, ribs, barbecue.
