Intrigue

There's a little something extra inside this bottle of Stillman Brown Petite Sirah. Here's a hint: We have no idea what it is.

Is there anything sexier than a man drinking a dark, smokey wine with a firm tannin structure while operating an oscillating tool? The answer to that is … yes. There are definitely sexier things than that.

But still. Look at him standing over there, manly, callused hand wrapped around that delicate glass of ripe blackberry, blueberry and vanilla flavors, while the other hand hacks through that delicious ribeye with a semicircle saw blade.

I don't know about you, but the mere sight of it sends shivers down my spine, and also a little vomit up my esophagus and into my mouth. It's a complicated emotion.

What's not complicated, however, is your decision to buy this delightful Petite Sirah. If a little mystery helps spark your intrigue, Stillman added a secret ingredient to it. Could be some exotic fruit. Could be the sweat of this man. Either way, you can't lose.

Features

2012 Stillman Petite Sirah, Paso Robles, "Deep Purple" 750ml 2-Pack

A moderate stylistic departure from my previous Petite Sirahs and Syrahs, this bottling is considerably more tannic: nothing two hours in the decanter or a rib eye won’t cure, though it will certainly hold over a decade in the bottle. Darker than the label, the wine shows aromas and flavors of ripe blackberry and blueberry, vanilla and smoky spices, with a firm but fine tannin structure. Primarily from Brohaugh Vineyard just outside Templeton, the higher tannic structure of the 2011 blended well with the precocious fruit of the 2012; thus the lack of a vintage on the label. A little something else was added, but Stillman won’t tell Us because the respective growers might see this and do a slow Burn.

Zeppelin Winery is a very small producer of super premium wines, based on the Central Coast of California. Founded in 2009 by winemaker Stillman Brown of Red Zeppelin Winery and wine veteran Dan Lewis (he's the office guy) they produce tiny lots of Syrah and other misunderstood varietals, with almost invariably insane labels.  Most can only be purchased directly, but once in a while they emerge into the light of day.
