Listen, we know this really cool winery we think you should meet. We don’t know, maybe you’re already attached to another winery, or maybe you’ve been burned before and you’re not ready to get back out there. But we really think you guys would hit it off. It’s called St. Supéry Vineyards & Winery, it lives in Napa Valley, California, and it’s really cute.
If by “cute” you mean “steeped in the traditions of French winemaking and Napa Valley viticulture,” that is. We could go on all night about the many awards crowding the St. Supéry trophy room, but we prefer to let this four-bottle sampler make the case. You’ll get two bottles apiece of two of St. Supéry’s most feted varieties for one easy-to-swallow price, along with the dubious satisfaction of counting yourself among the first customers of wine.woot.com. Someday, that status will open the doors of the powerful. Someday.
For now, we’re told that 2000 was a very good year ‘round St. Supéry’s way, and the proof is in the guzzling. The dark, rich 2000 Merlot offers up heaven-scented aromas of cherry and sweet herb, with just a pinch of tobacco. Once it’s actually rolling around on your tongue, you’ll fall in deep, passionate, romantic love with its smooth texture, intense raspberry flavor with touches of vanilla and toasty oak.
The 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon is the chubbier twin, a plush medley of plum, blackberry, and vanilla aromas and blackberry, currant, anise, and black cherry flavors. Firm tannins round its nicely-balanced finish into form without making a federal case out of it.
Uncork them right out of the carton and let the bacchanalia begin, or arrange them on your mantelpiece in tribute to this momentous viti-commercial occasion. Both wines will continue to develop long after they reach your home, so who knows what flavor surprises the coming years might reveal? We’re hoping ours winds up tasting like Chili-Cheese Fritos.
