A Message to Gourmet.Woot from Matthew Kelso, owner, Sagebrush Coffee:
We know what you’re thinking: “Sagebrush Coffee’s regular price is $30 for a freaking bag of coffee? How can anything possibly be that much better than the stuff I get at the grocery store?” Trust us, once you get a bag of premium, fresh, roasted-on-demand Sagebrush Coffee, there’s no going back. Those sad excuses for coffee on the shelves of your regular grocery store or those frilly, sugary $6 frappa-whatevers all lack a single fundamental detail that Sagebrush takes very seriously, and that’s freshness. Every bag we ship is roasted to order, making the coffee as fresh as can possibly be as it arrives on your doorstep. If you were to buy from some certain green mermaids *ahem* the coffee you receive is likely to have been roasted weeks if not months before it even becomes available to you, and that’s a recipe for a bad cup of coffee.

Not to mention the fact that they don’t make an extra effort to ensure that all of their coffees are direct trade certified, meaning the farmers over in South America or Africa who supply the coffee are receiving 100% of the money they’re earning from their coffee harvest without those pesky, greedy middle men trying to mooch off the real workers in this situation. So, is $30 really worth it? Let us answer that question with a question. Is buying ultra-premium coffee beans backed by direct trade certification and roasted-to-order freshness worth it?

We have had bundles for a while now and most of them are pairing two coffees that go well together.  We'll do our Two Favorites bundle or our Balanced & Smooth bundle.  We've had Dark and Bold ones or even an African Favorites.  This is one that is a little different.  We decided to take two coffees that we think show the breadth of what Sagebrush Coffee is.  We have a signature premium Ethiopian Coffee that is consistently a top seller and easily the best Ethiopian coffee we've offered all year.  We paired it with a top-selling Organic Honduras coffee.  I love this Honduras coffee, but it really is a chance to see what you can get from Sagebrush on a budget.  People comment that these are expensive coffees, but this Honduras is a spectacular coffee and doesn't hurt the budget like many of our others.  This bundle is a perfect introduction to Sagebrush Coffee.

Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Koke Gold Label
The first moment I tasted this coffee, I thought, "Amaretto".  I sipped it again and thought, "Oh, that's good."  As I went through and did my full analysis (Flavor, Finish, aroma, complexity, etc.), I couldn't help but think that this is just a good clean flavorful cup of coffee.  This is the first washed Ethiopian Gold Label in a while and it lives up to the billing.

Coffee Production / Farm: Koke is a family-owned washing station that lies on the side of a hill in the Yirgacheffe region. The Koke Washing Station has ideal growing conditions with high elevations and plentiful water sources. Their coffee cherries are grown all over the hills above and below the station. Along with their own coffee, they process coffee beans for over 2,000 small-scale multigenerational farmers, most of which grow an average of 6,000 coffee trees.

Yirgacheffe is the administrative center of the coffee-growing district. 40,000 coffee farmers in this region are part of the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU). This membership allows the coffee farmers to be exempt from the Ethiopian Coffee Exchange (ECX), which allows them to receive a premium for their premium coffees.

  • Grade: 1

Honduras Reserva Pacavita, Organic
Honduras coffees are complex for a Latin American coffee, but still smooth and nutty.  This one hits the nail on the head.  It has a nice almond / cocoa flavor with a citrus finish.  Every time I try a Honduras coffee I enjoy it and wonder why this isn't a more popular coffee growing country.

Coffee Production / Farm: Most farms in the area were established more than 30 years ago, and are between 2 and 3 hectares in size. Many are shaded by beautiful Inga trees. Surrounded by a diverse environment of biological reserves and mountain ranges, the Pacavita region has ideal climatic conditions for growing coffee. Coffee plants grow in rich clay soils, mostly shaded, at elevations of up to 1,700 meters ASL in this area of western Honduras. Many producers wet mill their own coffee and dry it completely on patios, preserving the quality of their beans themselves.

  • Roast Level: City Plus (Medium)

Sagebrush Coffee

It’s difficult to write a history of Sagebrush Coffee page, without talking about the owner Matt Kellso and the earliest stages of his love for coffee. When Matt was young, like climb to reach the top shelf young, he used to steal coffee beans from that pantry and eat them like candy. That may have been the birthplace of Sagebrush Coffee. Or maybe it was when a few years later a small independent espresso bar opened up next to the baseball card store that he frequented. There were many days for Matt that included delivering papers in the morning, then riding to the espresso store for a latte and then next door to the baseball card shop to spend the remainder of his paper route money. That was definitely the start of something.

Several years went by. Matt went on to become an engineer that drank a lot of coffee. He was a daily regular at the local coffee shop, in fact, many days he would schedule midday meetings there instead of at the office. On vacations, Matt and his wife Jenna would talk about opening a coffee shop in whatever small town they would visit, but it never really went beyond that.

One fateful day on one of those vacations the true seeds for Sagebrush Coffee were planted. In 2009 in Portland Oregon, Matt tried his first cup of third wave fresh-roasted coffee. The complexity and depth of flavors turned a life long love of coffee into a personal passion. As soon as Matt got home, he made it his mission to recreate those flavors. He tried local Arizona based coffee roasters and they just didn’t compare. So he began roasting his own coffee in small batches on his kitchen stove, learning the art and science of roasting coffee through study and hands on experience (and an obsession that borders on problematic). As his experience and ability grew, Matt graduated to more advanced roasting styles (the whirly pop popcorn popper has long since retired). Around the end of 2011, Matt began seeking out ways to bring his coffee to the public. Thus, Sagebrush Coffee was born.  Rather than opening a shop, he aimed to put his fresh roasted coffee online and market it to anyone that is seeking a better cup of coffee. Now, in the spring of 2017, Sagebrush is busy with a brand new retail location in Chandler, Arizona along with even increasing popularity online.

Welcome to Sagebrush Coffee!

Sagebrush Coffee continually seeks the best coffee sources, producing each order in small roast-to-order batches, all the while providing exemplary customer service. As much as we love coffee, our passion now is bringing these amazing beans to our customers.

You are our bottom line, and we won’t be happy until you are drinking the perfect cup of coffee while reflecting on a pleasant purchasing experience.
