2007 Pinot Noir, Rancho Santa Rosa Vineyards 750ml

A powerful entry leads to layers of black fruits and pomegranate with notes of vanilla in the finish. Exhibits the bright, expressive fruit characteristic of this fine vineyard. A vibrant and showy Pinot Noir that will develop nicely over time.

2008 Pinot Noir, Wolff Vineyard Edna Valley 750ml

The 2008 Wolff Pinot Noir pulls you in with a delicate, subtle rose-petal nose, followed by a supple raspberry and red apple skin palate. The snappy, racy acidity and lovely black cherry notes are wrapped in a silky, mellow texture that is lush yet feminine, with an articulated tannin and baked boysenberry finish. This is an excellent match for your grilled, stuffed pork chop or aubergine tapenade tapas.

The grapes were allowed to cold soak for a period of 6-7 days to extract color and flavor. The wine underwent fermentation in 1.5 ton open top fermenters and was punched down by hand. Each Pinot Noir lot was inoculated with Assmanhausen yeast for its slow fermentation properties and organoleptic influence. The maceration period averaged 20-25 days for optimum tannin and color extraction. Aging took place in 100% Francois Freres cooperage from a variety of forests for 11 months in 1/3 new oak. Due to the multiple clones and blocks on this vineyard harvest is always a challenge. Some blocks did not want to ripen, but patience prevailed. Agreeable weather just before harvest also helped mature the troublesome blocks.

The Vineyard site was first planted 30 years ago by one of the Edna Valley's winegrowing pioneers. The vineyard is impeccably farmed and biodynamic practices are deployed. The cooler climate of the Edna Valley and low yielding vineyards enjoyed at Wolff provide a flavor profile we find unique. Wolff Vineyards is one of the first vineyards in the Central Coast to become “Certified Sustainably Grown” as part of a pilot project with the Central Coast Vineyard Team. The vines are situated on steep slopes not common to the Edna Valley. Here the fruit benefits from southern exposure as well as from the shallow, well-drained sandy loam. The Pinot Noir blocks are planted on 115, 667, 777 and Pommard, of which Summerland contracts all four of these proven Dijon clones.

The grapes were picked at optimal ripeness and vinified in 5 different yeasts. After fermentation (about 20 days) the lots were pressed, blended and placed into a barrel program of French Oak. The youngest vineyard in our portfolio shows Pinot Noir in a restrained, elegant style reminiscent of Volnay.
