2015 Orgoglio Sangiovese, Contrada Vignale Vineyard, Italy
A typical Sangiovese, this wine is a brick-red in color. Aromas of roasted red pepper, plum, and cherry mingle with a hint of earthiness. On the palate, concentrated notes of plum, rose, and tart cherry layer over the savory earth and herbaceous notes of thyme and oregano.

Vineyards
In southwestern Italy, the Contrada Vignale vineyard flourishes under abundant sunshine. The 2015 vintage was certainly a sunny one, as July became the hottest month on record. For this wine, the saving grace was two-fold: for one, the vineyard is located in the “heel of Italy,” and thus influenced by cooling Mediterranean breezes, the other factor was that the winter and spring temperatures were average and created plenty of water reserves going into the scorching summer. These conditions were particularly ideal for Sangiovese, which thrives in drier conditions. The sandy soil of the Contrada Vignale vineyard further help keep vines dry, allowing grapes to hang on the 26-year-old vines until September. Upon harvesting, traditional winemaking techniques including a 10-day maceration on the skins in stainless tanks contributed to this wine’s tight, bold style.
