At Occasio, they have used the wisdom of these “pioneers of Petite” to craft a wine that pays tribute to Livermore’s proud winemaking heritage.

This 2009 Petite Sirah was sourced entirely of the heritage Concannon clone from Del Arroyo Vineyard, high in the southern foothills of Livermore Valley. Here, the gravelly soil, warm days and cool, coastally moderated nights produce concentrated fruit with excellent acidity and structured tannins.

The grapes were hand harvested in the early morning hours of October 8th. Hand sorted and de-stemmed without crushing, the grapes were cold soaked for 48 hours before fermenting in  specialized Petite Sirah tanks at cool temperature in order to preserve the characteristics of the Del Arroyo Vineyard terroir. Cap temperature was maintained by pumping over every four hours for the first half of the fermentation, decreasing the pump over frequency near the end of fermentation in order to control tannin extraction. At completion of fermentation, the wine was pressed off the skins and transferred to new, American white oak barrels where it was aged for eighteen months prior to bottling unfined and unfiltered.

Owner:
John Kinney
Location:
Livermore, CA
Descendants of fifteen generations of farmers, owner, winemaker and student of Livermore Valley History John Kinney and his family have always been aware of the fleeting nature of opportunity. Beginning in school when his debate teacher introduced him to the Latin phrase Occasio aegre offertur, facile amittitur, John realized those were the words to live by – to know that the right moment comes along rarely and is easily lost.

It is this attention to timeliness confronting both winegrower and maker that determines every event in the winemaking process, from the perfect harvest to the calculated release of a finished wine. Our principles are guided by this ancient mantra, which allows each wine to express its own most perfect nature.

The fleeting nature of opportunity is illustrated in the design of our labels. The winged, vintage pocket watch signifies not only the uniqueness of each moment of time, but how quickly these moments pass. Look closely and you will discover some of the tools of our passion. From the images that grace our label to the unique nature of our wines, we pay tribute to opportunity and the elusive perfection of timing.

After graduating from Davis, John Kinney devoted his career to research and education with the goal of one day owning his own winery. This opportunity came in the form of a spectacular 2007 grape harvest, and with his family encouraging his belief in Occasio aegre offertur, facile amittitur – opportunity comes rarely, and is easily lost, John set out to build a winery to showcase the remarkable terroir of Livermore Valley.

His friends have been known to call him a true Renaissance man, but he would humbly disagree and simply ask that the wine speak for itself. Using nature as his guide and his hands to harness its energy, John unleashes the soul of Livermore Valley’s unique terroir. John meticulously handcrafts each wine using grapes he has selected from growers who share his passion for quality. With very limited production, John brings this fervor for perfection and respect for timing to every bottle he creates. Even with the growing awards and accolades, John remains committed to keeping production small and local. You’ll only find Livermore hand pruned and hand harvested grapes crafted here!
