Villanova House Blend
Cupping notes: Sweet Chocolate, Caramel, Berry Melange
Roast level: Medium

Named after the restaurant that Carlo’s brother Franco Di Ruocco owned, Ristorante Villanova (Oakland circa 1980) – and the house blend that was served there. Its mild intensity embodies the essential characteristics of a classic American roast, yet reflects our passion for traditional, wood fired roasting. The Villanova House Blend is sweet enough to serve as a dessert coffee and mild enough to enjoy throughout the day.

Organic Seven Bridges Blend
Roast level: Dark

There are seven bridges that keep the people of the Bay Area connected, and the Seven Bridges Blend pays homage to the diversity of people and tastes in the San Francisco Bay Area.

A blend of Fair Trade and organic certified coffees, the Seven Bridges Blend is a velvety bodied blend with depth and a complex, multilayer flavor dynamic. A favorite among customers and chefs alike, this blend can be found at some of the finest dining establishments around the San Bay Area.
Item Tasting Notes: Cupping notes : Velvety body, Complex sugars, Sweet acidity

French Roast
Cupping notes: Deep Smokiness, Browned Butter, Caramel
Roast level: Dark

We choose the coffees for this blend for their ability to be enhanced by a deep, dark roast. This allows for intense flavors such as baker’s chocolate, sweet graham cracker and aromatic, cedar-like wood to accompany rich smokiness in both flavor and aroma. A lightly syrupy mouthfeel and low acidity allow this intensely flavorful coffee to both counter and complement rich desserts or a fresh baked morning pastry.

Jack London Blend
Buesaco , Nariño
Cupping notes: Vibrant Acidity, Green Apple, Caramel Cream
Roast level: Light

Maria Etelvina Diaz embodies not only the passion for premium quality coffee, but a legacy of family tradition. After her husband, Humberto Luis Lopez, passed away, she and her son Nilson Luis Lopez continued to nurture and tend to the farm. Their dedication and commitment to quality is reflected by this immaculate coffee. Maria was the 1st place winner of the 2012 “Cup of Excellence” and El Bado is the current record-holder for Cup of Excellence awards in the region with four consecutive top-twenty placements.

Nariño is located in the southernmost tip of the country, just above the equator, where sun is abundant throughout the year and the soils benefit from the nearby Galeras Volcano. Grown at extreme altitudes topping 2,200 meters above sea level, El Bado is able to thrive because of the warm humid winds that drift up the mountain side. The fruit develops slowly, which translates to exceptional bean density and sugar accumulation resulting in a coffee that has very defined berry notes, vibrant acidity and lingering flavors of maple and sweet cream.

Chiaroscuro Blend
Cupping notes: Smoky, Mild fruit notes, Layered
Roast level: Medium-Dark

The word Chiaroscuro (key-are-oh-SKOO-row) combines the Italian term for “light” (chiaro) and “dark” (scuro). It was first used to describe art – most notably from the Italian painter Caravaggio. His dramatic use of light and dark largely influenced the Baroque artists who followed. Likewise our Chiroscuro Blend is a complex coffee, layered with smoky caramel punctuated by mildly bright fruit notes.

Vendor Details

Mr. Espresso

Owner:
The Di Ruocco Family
Location:
Oakland, CA

Today, Mr Espresso has grown into a Bay Area institution – as a quality roaster and an established provider of espresso equipment, service, and training to a sizable share of coffeehouses and restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.

Mr. Espresso continues to be family-owned and operated with two generations of Di Ruoccos working together in the Oakland showroom and roasting facility to ensure that what we began over 30 years ago will endure.

Along with the new generation and keeping with the pace of change in our industry, the old world methods we use are evolved through education and experience. A balance of art versus science is now our goal.  Our coffee now has a distinctively Italian American profile, maintaining the emphasis on espresso while rounding out our selection with amazing single origins and blends, at a variety of roasts.

We have seen many trends come and go, and to our knowledge, things have a tendency to work in cycles. Without deviating from the things that have contributed to our success over the years, we are always striving and pursuing new ways towards higher quality and a greater diversity of tastes.

We think you’ll find that Mr. Espresso strikes that wonderful balance between time honored traditional methods and the emerging trends of the marketplace.
