Did you see the name and get excited to gulp down some wine that tastes like delicious cured Italian meat? We're sorry to disappoint, but this wine is not that. Instead, you'll find that each bottle of Martellotto II Capoccia Riserva Red Blend has flavors of lavender, thyme, and lovely dried berries. But hey, nothing is stopping you from enjoying it with a few slices of capicola, if you want.

2016 Martellotto II Capoccia Riserva Red Blend, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara
Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara is one of California's newest AVA's, established in 2009. Located on the far east side of Santa Ynez valley, this is one of the "hottest" areas in the region, and the specialty is Bordeaux varietals. Greg Martellotto has been making wine in the area since 2005 and his focus on Cabernet and Bordeaux varietals sets him apart in Santa Barbara County, which is better known for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Rhone varietal production. This is a tour de force and will certainly put Happy Canyon on the map for Bordeaux blended wines! It is truly a "capolavoro" masterwork.
Il Capoccia (The "Bossman" in Italian) is Greg's Riserva. The wine is a proprietary blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. The wine is a treat for those looking for something different from the usual. Dark fruits of blackberries and blueberries, with hints of coffee, mocha, oak, and vanilla lead the show, with supporting aromatic characters like pencil shaving and a bouquet garni from the Tuscan country side. The wine is deep and meditative. It is the type of high class wine that has a long way to go in terms of development. Just drinking through two glasses over the course of a half hour, the wine rolls from dark and brooding to sweet fruit with vanilla and opens up with lavender, thyme, and lovely dried berries.
