6 - 2015 Mare di Vetro Aglianico, Italy

2015 Mare di Vetro Aglianico, Italy
Mare di Vetro- Sea of Glass in Italian, is the perfect name for this beautiful, dry Italian red wine, because the grapes are grown near the Adriatic Sea.  In spite of the hottest July on record, the 2015 vintage showed both excellent quality and high yields across Italy, moving the country back to the number one spot in production worldwide. In Puglia, Aglianico vines flourish in sandy soil and the hot, Mediterranean climate. Approximately 100 meters of elevation and sea breezes helped the vines escape too much heat. For this wine, the slow-ripening grapes developed concentrated flavors, remaining on the 15-year-old vines into October. After which they macerated for 10 days prior to being pressed off.  This extended time allowed all of the color from the grape skins to be absorbed into the juice, resulting in a wine of extraordinarily dark color.

Deep, ruby and burgundy in color, this wine is bold and dark. Notes of black cherry, plum, and cranberry give way to earthy notes of white pepper, smoke, and cocoa. High in tannins and acid, it can age upwards of 5 years.

Food Pairing
This wine is full-bodied and tannic, making it an ideal pairing with beef brisket, portabella mushrooms or hard, sharp cheeses such as Asiago.

Vendor Details

AWDirect

AWDirect owns, creates, and represents wine from CA and around the world. From sourcing to bottling, logistics to brand development, AWDirect has spent the last 30+ years improving their systems to provide their customers with everything they need in one place.

Founder and CEO Bruce Cunningham has been in the wine industry since 1987. After earning an undergraduate degree in Wine Marketing Studies at the University of Adelaide (South Australia), Bruce attended business school and has been involved in many aspects of the industry with a specific focus in packaging and production. After relocating to New York from Australia, he saw the need for custom labels of Australian wines for direct marketing in the USA. AWDirect (formerly Aussie Wine Direct) was born. This focus on a market segment was, at the time, embryonic, and quickly led to further expansion of both suppliers and various segments of the wine market.

AWDirect relocated to California in 2004, and the team expanded, led by the formidable talents of Bruce’s business partner, Kimberly Cunningham. Kim – an engineer, and techno-geek at heart – with her experience in running divisions of some of the world’s largest companies, was able to build systems to help create the efficiency needed to allow AWDirect to not only grow, but also compete in a wine world that can be inflexible and intolerant.
