There’s a lesson there. We think.
So once upon a time there was this dude who, like, wanted to make wine. I dunno, I guess he was just into that sort of thing. So he starts to make it and he’s like, “Man, no one’s drinkin’ it. WTF?”
So he takes an ad out in the paper and he’s all, like, “From the golden hills of this valley or some s&%^ with fertile soils and beautiful mountain breezes or something, we bring this wine to thou.” Or thee. Whatever. And the people are like, “uh, duh. Of course your wine comes from fertile valleys and mountains and s&%#. That’s where wine grows.”
So the dude’s all bummed out, right? And he’s like, “What the hell do I have to do to get these people to drink my stuff?” And then it hits him: he just has to make good stuff. So he whips up something like this Henson Central Coast Syrah 3-Pack and people try it and they’re like, “Holy crap, man, it tastes like dark berries.” But that’s a good thing. Even if dark berries sounds kinda weird and menacing.
So the moral of the story is just make good stuff, I guess.

- Robert Henson

After 10 years of managing restaurants, building wine lists, and developing his own palate, winemaker Robert Henson returned to school in 2002 to study Enology at Fresno State. While pursuing his Enology degree and distributing wine for Chambers and Chambers he had the opportunity to work with Michael Michaud from Michaud Vineyard, a 32 year veteran and the authoritative resource for grape growing in Monterey County. Upon completing his university studies, Robert continued to work as Michaud’s Assistant Wine Grower until 2007. He then took a position as Winemaker and Vineyard Manager of a small winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where he received numerous awards and accolades, before eventually making his way back home to the San Luis Obispo area. Henson Wines is his first independent endeavor.
Henson Wines was founded with the goal of producing wines that not only taste good but also express a sense of place. We work closely with small, sustainable farmers on the Central Coast of California. In order to bring the unique signature of each vineyard into the glass, there is a minimalist approach to everything we do. Grapes are hand harvested and fermented in small batches. Even then, only select barrels are used for the Henson label. We hope that you enjoy our wines and look forward to sharing each vintage with you.
