You know what’d be great? Getting presents in mid-January.

It takes a lot of the stress off the holiday season.

I’m just saying it’d be great if someone were to offer a great deal on not only wine, but wine from a very respectable and well-known vineyard. Say, a Havens 2006 Cabernet and Merlot 4-Pack. I don’t mean any old “we gotta move a few bottles” sale, either. I’m talking, like, half what you might normally pay. For extremely good wine from an extremely respected wine maker.

That’d be really nice, but to be perfect you’d want to have some sort of rarity about it. Maybe, and I’m just spitballing here, maybe if it was one of the last chances to get wine from a storied winemaker before…I don’t know, before something bad happened and they weren’t selling wine any more. Say, for whatever reason, they closed one chapter and started another chapter.

Now if something like that were to happen, you could probably expect to see a lot of the remaining wine being sold off. In fact, I’d be willing to wager that some wine-related-websites might feature ONLY Havens wine for the rest of the year. So if Merlot or Cabernet weren’t your thing, you could definitely check back in a couple of days for similar deals on different varietals from the same revered vineyard.

So obviously, and hypothetically, of course, this vineyard has a pretty reputable name so someone’s going to buy it eventually and try to keep going, but who knows how that’s going to go? That’s why you’d want the last selloff of the “original recipe,” so to speak.

Here’s the real kicker, though: for some reason, and I’m not saying legal reasons but it could work if that’s what kind of scenario you like, the shipping of this wine will commence the week of January 4th. Sounds bad at first, right? But think about it: no worrying about it arriving on time for Christmas, about gift wrapping, or getting to enjoy it over the holidays when you have to drive 47 miles between both your family and the in-laws.
If, theoretically, such an offer existed, you could even order it for yourself and then let the season’s greetings toss you around from office party to family gathering and back again, completely boggling your mind with the details and drama, only to receive a thoughtful out-of-the-blue gesture come January. “Oh yeah,” you’d think to yourself, “I completely forgot about this. What a nice surprise!”

And as far as surprises go, yo could do worse than a sultry Merlot with aromas of black cherry, redcurrant, licorice and tobacco leaf with hints of spice. Of course a big, bold Cabernet Sauvignon bursting with chocolate and sweet blackberry flavors balanced with soft tannins and oak makes for a pretty nice surprise, too.

Yeah, a nice leisurely gift arriving sometime after January 4. That’d be perfect. It could be your post-holiday treat, an early Valentine’s Day present, or used to celebrate a different holiday.
Hypothetically speaking, of course.

Founded: 1984
Location: Napa Valley, CA

Prior to selling his winery, Michael Havens made Merlot in a distinctly Bordeaux style, with a restrained sweetness and notes of lead pencil, minerals, game and tobacco leaf. He was also a pioneer of California Syrah in a distinctly northern Rhône style, typically showing notes of dark fruits, black pepper and gunflint.

Founded in 1984 by winemaker Michael Havens, Havens Wine Cellars have earned distinction for its Merlot, Syrah and their Bordeaux-style red blend called Bouriquot.
