A Harvest Moon is the closest full moon to the autumnal equinox; not, as we assumed, when the moon is pregnant with a baby moon.

THREE FACTS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT THE MOON:

Someday the moon will crash into the Earth. That day is Wednesday.

It's much easier to find your shoe that is lost in the brambles when the moon is full.

"Waxing gibbous" is not as dirty as it sounds.

2010 Harvest Moon Cabernet Sauvignon, Dry Creek Valley, Buchignani Ranch 750ml

The aromas are bright with earthy green olive and exotic spices on the nose; it is almost reminiscent of spiced, Mexican hot cocoa. This wine is structured with slight tannins gripping and releasing ever so quickly. There is a green olive note that playfully skirts around the edges and continues on to the finish. Beautiful old style, elegant Cabernet.

Grower & Winemaker’s Notes:
2010 growing season was colder-than-normal.  The Spring started out warm with a great bud break and fruit set, then the summer weather patterns turned cold and foggy.  This vintage would be considered a “lean” year.  In August we had a heat spell that damaged many of the ripening clusters forcing growers to drop the burnt fruit which in the long run made for additional complexities and layers in our wines.

Our Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cab from a single vineyard nestled up against the mountainside in the heart of the Dry Creek Valley.

2011 Harvest Moon Cabernet Sauvignon, Dry Creek Valley, Buchignani Ranch 750ml

Inside this bottle, one finds spicy, dried herbal notes leading into an elegant coco mouth feel. Slight tannins give this wine a silky texture. This old world style Cab is wonderfully balanced and will pair with smoked fish to a pepper encrusted filet.

Grower & Winemaker's Notes: This Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a single vineyard from the Dry Creek Valley. We pick our grapes earlier than others, seeking lower sugars in the grape, and ultimately, lower alcohols and more delicate, juicy flavors in our wines.

2012 Harvest Moon Cabernet Sauvignon, Dry Creek Valley, Buchignani Ranch 750ml

This old world-style Cabernet is incredibly balanced with dusty herbal notes and elegant cocoa spice. Our 2012 single-origin cab is structured with slight tannins gripping and releasing ever so quickly allowing it be enjoyed early on. There is an interesting green olive note that playfully skirts around the edges of the sage, anise core and continues on to the finish. We are proud to offer this beautifully traditional Cabernet. Grower & Winemaker’s Notes:
The 2012 growing season brought to wine country some of the most optimum summer weather patterns in decades.  A solid spring fruit set ensured the largest harvest in Sonoma County’s history. The great spring conditions transitioned into near perfect Summer weather with above average temperature during the day and below average at night meant there was a large temperature variance every 12 hours of approximately 45 degrees.  This temperature flux allowed for the days to ripen the complex sugars but the cold nights retained the natural freshness and acidity.

The Harvest Moon: the moon at and about the period of fullness that is nearest to the autumnal equinox.  In the legend of the Harvest moon, it is said that all full moons have their own special characteristics based primarily on the whereabouts of the ecliptic in the sky at the time of year that these moons are visible.

Harvest Moon Estate and Winery was founded on growing, producing and bottling world-class Russian River Valley wine in a balanced, elegant style. Our premise is that Russian River Valley Zinfandel can be just as layered and complex as any Pinot Noir or Bordeaux variety in the world and receive the same respect.  The Pitts family has grown quality grapes in the Russian River Valley since 1976. In 2000, son Randy reverse migrated from San Francisco back to Sonoma County to assume the farming responsibilities at the family's modest nine-acre ranch. In conjunction with lessons on farming by his Dad and a few viticulture/enology courses at the local junior college, Randy made a barrel of homemade Zinfandel off the ranch's back block which turned out exceptionally tasty. Quickly concluding that properly farmed and judiciously fermented, Zinfandel has great capabilities of being California's own wine nobility.  The growers-turned winemakers birthed their inaugural vintage in 2002 and look forward to making their Zinprint on the winescene for decades to come.

In addition to growing Zinfandel, Harvest Moon also hand crafts small amounts of Russian River Valley Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir and Dry Creek Cabernet Sauvignon.
