About the vineyard: Located in the center of the Alexander Valley, the Ascentia Estate vineyard sits atop rolling hillsides with the valley floor stretched out below. These gentle slopes are planted to several clones of Cabernet Sauvignon trained to a variety of trellis systems to best optimize the unusual diversity of terroir found in this single property. The ranch’s soil is composed of an array of marine-influenced and volcanic-derived parent materials and these, combined with the site’s myriad exposures and elevations, create up to fifteen unique blocks providing many blending components from within a single vineyard. Each of these blocks is vinted separately, allowing Geyser Peak to maximize the potential of each block and create a structured, beautifully layered wine.
2008 Geyser Peak Ascentia Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley 750ml
More than a hundred and twenty five years after its founding, Geyser Peak Winery is proud to release the seventh vintage of its first estate-designated Cabernet Sauvignon.
The distinctive flavor and aroma profiles of Ascentia Vineyard Cabernet remind one of cherry chocolate cordials and blooming gardenia. The bright cherry fruit has underlying earth flavors suggesting dark chocolate, fresh-tilled earth, cedar and a touch of sweet tobacco. The bouquet is primarily fruit driven with berry and pomegranate overtones but there is a compelling floral note that provides lift and interest. Aging in French oak barrels and puncheons has built a soft but full mouthfeel and adds a suggestion of spice to the finish.
The 2008 vintage was warm and easily reached maturity in the vineyard in early October, gentle crushing followed by a 10 day fermentation and a two week extended maceration produced a wine with classic understated style and vibrant fruit. Enjoy best from now through 2016.
2009 Geyser Peak Ascentia Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley 750ml
More than a hundred and twenty five years after its founding, Geyser Peak Winery is proud to release the eighth vintage of its first estate-designated Cabernet Sauvignon.
The terraces that line the highest elevations of the Ascentia vineyards are affectionately known at the winery as the “Wedding Cake”. It is from this exceptional portion of the property that Geyser Peak sources the Block wine. Raspberry and pomegranate fruit are rounded out by chocolaty tannins and light hints of white blossoms. Rich cherry fruit on the palate is complemented by soft notes of fresh loam and spicy cigar box. Aging in French oak brings a caramel sweetness to the red fruit. Enjoy this wine with short ribs, glazed pork, or hard cheeses.
The 2009 vintage was cool but steady and with even maturation. Gentle crushing followed by a 7 day fermentation and a two week extended maceration produced a robust wine that drinks well in its youth, enjoy now through 2016.
