2015 Cian Falanghina, Puglia, Italy
Pale yellow in color, aromas of tropical fruit indicate the full ripeness of the grapes. On the palate, orange blossom, pear, and additional citrus notes make up a full body.
Food Pairing: Red pepper roasted chicken thighs.
Vineyards: Overlooking the cian – Italian for cyan – waters of the Adriatic Sea, the vineyards of Cian Falanghina bask under plentiful sunshine. Puglia, located in the southeastern corner of Italy, is a region renowned for its concentrated wines. The Mediterranean climate of this region means mild winters and hot, dry summers – it is one of the driest and hottest regions in Italy. Vintage 2015 was certainly hot, as a heatwave in July made its way into the record books. Falanghina vines, generally suited to warm, hot temperatures, also benefited from slight elevation to expose them to cooling sea breezes and clay soils that retain water and stay cool. In addition, the vines are approximately 10-years-old, meaning they are less fragile than young vines. Falanghina grapes themselves are adapted to the hot temperatures, as they are coated with a thin layer of protective wax. Harvest began in September for this wine. Grapes were handled with care, pressed gently, and fermented in stainless steel tanks, preserving fresh primary fruit characteristics and allowing for pure varietal expression.

- Bruce Cunningham
- Founded:
- 1987
- Location:
- Santa Rosa, California
Founder and CEO, Bruce Cunningham, has been in the wine industry since 1987. After earning an undergraduate degree in Wine Marketing Studies at the University of Adelaide (South Australia), Bruce attended business school and has been involved in many aspects of the industry with a specific focus in packaging and production. After relocating to New York from Australia, he saw the need for custom labels of Australian wines for direct marketing needs in the USA. A W Direct (formerly Aussie Wine Direct), was born. This focus on a market segment was, at the time embryonic, and quickly led to further expansion of both suppliers and various segments of the wine market.
A W Direct relocated to California in 2004, and the team expanded, led by the formidable talents of his business partner, Kimberly Cunningham. Kim - an engineer, and techno-geek at heart - with her experience in running divisions of some of the world’s largest companies, was able to build systems to help create the efficiency needed to allow A W Direct to grow, but also compete in a wine world that can be inflexible and intolerant. As the company grew, Kim enhanced the business by developing a successful team of energetic, challenge-driven people who have the right “moxie” to keep our well-oiled machine running smoothly.
